A bit off topic, but how many people saw William and Kate arrive in a blue (I think it was blue Whistle ) L460 at the Memorial Service for HRH Prince Philip on the telly on Tuesday?

Couldn't see a lot 'cos the cameras didn't stay on it for long but was definitely the new car Thumbs Up All LR cars from 1984

I drove it today, I can honestly say it’s a lovely car.

Comfort and quiet aspect is amazing. I drove a D350 HSE with a few bits spec’s on it.

In terms of drive, it’s very smooth over the bumps and undulations of Cornish roads. I guess I’d compare it to a late l405 on 20” wheels. This was on 23” wheels and I’d say it was a better ride.

The handling (not important I know) but I do feel that the 405 can have a bit of boatness to it at times (not a bad thing in a straight line, in the low speed corners the l460 outperforms it by keeping it level yet still comfortable. Impressive the dynamics of the chassis yet keeping the all important comfort aspect.

Steering is lovely and light when manoeuvring, and they’ve kept a good steady smooth feel at high speeds. I personally hate it when companies weight the steering too much to give a sporty feel when they actually leave it numb.

My driving style is a bit of all types. I do track days in my track car, I like to cruise at sensible speeds and sometimes I like to hustle along. I’d say the l460 can cater for everyone’s tastes. It will tackle a B road with sure footed confidence much along the lines of the sport can yet when you want to go full waft, I don’t think there’s anything out there that can match it. Current s class and phantom maybe.

Interior quality is VERY high, feels as premium as you’d hope for. Although I will complain I don’t like the gear selector. It’s a bit meh. Maybe a higher spec one will improve on this.

Seating position is as we are used to but for sure the seats are a comfort level above, bare in mind this is just a HSE so I expect the higher trim levels improve on this.

Rear steer improves on what is already a good turning circle

Infotainment is a step on from the facelift 405 but I expect a bigger jump for the facelift. It’s very easy to use and looks good too, however not worlds apart from current offerings from JLR.

Apologies it’s s bit of a quick review but I didn’t have much time today. I get on with my dealer well so he insisted I drove it. 19 L405 4.4 AB + Disco3 pick up + 800BHP Rothmans 911

Sorry, should of noted about the engine and box

Gear change was super smooth, genuinely couldn’t feel it change. Tried on the paddles too as that’s how I often drive (when towing especially) crisp sharp changes (personally can’t fault the 405 on that) but it is a smoother change than the 405. Again I don’t think they could of done better. Sorry I didn’t check the amount of gears, I got to 8 and forgot.

Engine is super smooth and quiet but gives a satisfying straight 6 hum when pushed hard. My initial thoughts were hmm is this underpowered? (my view on the 4.4 and 3.0 of the 405 is: off the mark and low speed grunt under 60mph is noticeable when driving the 4.4 but above 60 you don’t notice a huge huge difference, always felt the 3.0 405 was good enough) I drive a 4.4 as it’s what came up at the time. Back to the D350, I think I just caught it off guard. Once I pushed on in it, I’d say real world pace it’s as fast if not faster than the 4.4, it may not feel like it as it’s a smoother delivery, but it is faster. Personally find it more refined in terms of cabin vibrations under load and noise than the 4.4 which is a good thing.

I also have a D350 on order so can’t comment on Phevs but yes the D350 is more than enough for this car for daily duties, towing, and getting a bit of a shift on. 19 L405 4.4 AB + Disco3 pick up + 800BHP Rothmans 911

Thanks for your thoughts and great that you were able to drive one today.
Visiting my local dealer this afternoon, they said no joe public are allowed to drive them for at least 2 weeks despite having 3 cars there at the dealership including a show room demo car.
The whole launch has been a bit of a non event in respect of what you can see/drive and delivery date promises but at least we are all hopefull that delivery might happen in the the not too distant future.

It's all been a complete shambles in terms of communications with customers.

Sounds like the step on we were hoping for - biggest downside on the L405 was always the cornering, we went from an X5 to Range Rover and they were night and day.

Thanks for the taking the time for write up 👍

I’m back and called the dealership today. Cars are still embargoed until JLR give the thumbs up to hand over cars to customers. So my car has now had its PDI and is just ready and waiting for JLR to determine customers can have their cars.

992 went today too so hopefully the wait won’t be too long.
