Second Compressor Install/Mod

The Plan:
To install a second compressor, in-line to the main one.

The Reason:
Faster suspension changes and increased critical system redundancy. I also aim to use one of the newer designed pumps from the 05+ as I'd like to think that any technical developments have been incorperated into the new pump.

How:
T piece into the air line, run a separate 12V feed to the second pump via a relay, using the signal to the first pump as the switch.

Help?:
A). What Amperage do the EAS pumps run at does anyone know?
B). Can you get a thermal cut out switch that resets itself each time? I'd like to wire it in-line to the signal to the relay.
C). Does anyone have an old new gen pump kicking around I can play with/make compatible with the BMW system?

why not just replace your pump with a newer one..the up/down speed is pretty quick on mine..

I don't need to replace my one, I just want a secondary one. Much like the battery, no need, but want to see what is possible.

Running a second compressor would half the load on the existing one for example and it would live twice as long. Also means there is always a "hot spare".

Might also look at installing a second reservoir as per the BMW system that wasn't carried over to the RR. This then could expand to haiving an air line atatched to be able to inflate ones own tyres.

Think of all the 20p's you'd save!

It's actually something I've wanted to do since having a classic with EAS.

where will you fit it?, and how will you connect it up to the ecu, to ensure they work together

I have LPG, so plenty of space in the spare wheel well... When mounted on the rubber mounts the pump is fairly silent.

The EAS ECU is less trouble than you may think:

It asks for the tank to fill by supplying the compressor with 12V. It looks at the pressure of the tank increasing, when it reaches its threshold it removes the 12V supply.

It has speed logic, but that logic is written to only take account of a slow pump rather than fast.

There are other scenarios, for example if the system detects the pressure switch is faulty, it will raise the suspension using the pump only and not the pressure from the reservoir. Again this wouldn't cause an issue in this setup.

To power the other pump I would use a switched relay, so when the ECU calls for the pump to run, it also switches the relay to the other pump on, when it turns off, the other pump turns off.

wouldn't it be great if you could use the two compressors to make the range bounce like those american custom cars..

The 2011 height changes are insanely quick - sub 5 seconds to select access. Have a look at the latest pump - I'm sure that will suffice!

I'm liking this idea. I've thought about this but never implemented. You can pic up some very cheap twin stage tyre compressors at a fraction of the cost of a new EAS pump. What pressure does the pump need to deliver? Dan might be worth sending Preston air an email as they are currently working on a compressor upgrade.

The P38 pump was rated to 150psi IIRC. The L322 is a similar size / bladder setup. I dont imagine its going to be too much different from that.

An aspect to look into as well is the duty ratio of the pump ( how much time on versus time off ). The pump in the P38 was higher than average ( 15% rings a bell ) ... meaning that it needs to run for longer periods before heating up too much.

Your idea is something I consider as well ... but not something i'll look into beyond an idea until my pump wimps out. V8 or else ...
