This might cause a few car sales in London! Ironically my 4.4 SDV8 is free, yet my 2012 Skoda Octavia work bus that does 55+mpg is £12.50 a day!

What’s next after he’s spent this windfall? My go to vehicle for London use is Euro 6 compliant, how long before that’s dragged into this sorry mess.

As a Londoner living in central london I think the ULEZ is a good idea as the air quality is a major health issue. I have concerns over how it’s implemented as it’s a bit crude but no doubt this will improve and get more sophisticated in time but it badly needed doing. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

If it was to be truly fair and targeting emissions, then it should be based on distance driven in the zone and graded by the vehicle level of polution rather than a daily charge.

This would also be the most logical solution nationwide with a plug in OBD2 monitor or just tax the fuel to cover it which would be even more straight forward with no admin etc. Tom

@Flashman. A distance based system would be a lot fairer but a lot more complex and expensive to implement i.e tracking devices in every car in the UK. How would an OBD2 monitor work? If you just raised the tax on fuel how would thus work? Everyone including Euro 6 vehicle owners would be paying and how does that help air quality? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Who’s greener, someone that has owned a small city car for 25 years or someone who changes their Range Rover every 2 or 3 years? And your reward for being frugal is a £4.5k per annum bill

As central government has proved in recent years, just because you hold the highest office doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be any good at your job.

It's been going down because more people are driving cleaner cars - Euro 5 and 6 mainly. The problem is that the volume of cars is now going up again so remaining steps to limit total pollution increases are needed. In a few years the % of <Euro 6 cars will be very small so it's not going to be an issue for most people. Beyond Euro 6 I'm not sure what significant reductions in air pollution can be gained from cars as you are at a level where particulate pollution from brakes and tyres are just as significant. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

i cant believe that london [west] hasnt a park and ride ..that would produce income from parking fees and reduce traffic.. ... - .- -.

I wouldn’t be so sure about this, around here there are plenty of VAG diesels on the road that are not Euro 6 (mine included) that are absolutely fine in every way, passes it’s MOT every year without issue wants for very little work and returns a average of 45mpg.. it’s on a 2012 plate I can’t see why I’d be in a rush to replace it.

That suggests to me that the ULEZ has more to do with revenue generation (to fill the hole in TfL's accounts ?) than environmental. Government departments have latched on to the fact that they can get away with revenue generation far easier by "selling" it under the environmental umbrella.

Kahn would have been more use to Londonstan if he had followed his fathers career path.
