So it looks like I decided to deep clean one of the key's having dried it out in some silica gel desiccant, close inspection has revealed some pretty extensive corrosion to the IC and board including damaged leg's and track - -so its dead.

I know it requires a new KVM, Key and SDD programming or a auto locksmith to "virginise" the KVM which tbh I don't fancy.

Has anyone been through this process? The dealer has quoted a not insignificant amount of money for a KVM, Key and programming when it goes in for it's service next month - but I am considering my options, especially if it results in getting more usable keys.

Has anyone used second hand key's in the process? I wouldn't mind buying 1 x new key and 1 x Used key so I have 3 in total in case it happens again.

Also can the IID Tool program a new KVM rather than using SDD?

There also seem's to be a vast array of key part numbers the latest being LR087661 but all of the 5 button remotes look the same. If anyone has purchased them, which did you end up with?

The locksmith doesn't virginise the KVM.
When I had mine done they had some kit to solder directly onto the board and go directly to the memory, the key's not in my possession were deleted and he added me a new second key. All done in the back of his van on my drive + cutting a new emergency blade.

It honestly took him longer to get my KVM out as it's stuck behind the rear climate stuff in the boot on an L405. Current

That’s interesting, one of the locksmiths I spoke to said that approach for MY16 > wouldn’t enable the transponder for the emergency start (held against the console) but would work for all of the keyless stuff, unless I used a non genuine key. I'd have a ring round, it will only be the more talented locksmiths that tackle stuff like this. It's not an easy plug the laptop in and run some software kind of job, it's a bit more involved. Current

Hi, I programmed my Freelander 2 keys, bought on ebay for £17 with the Autel Maxi AP200 app on my phone with the Landrover add on software. It was a £57 app. with a £28 add on and I bought the dongle from an Autel agent. Its done on the car so no laptop needed.

Unfortunately it's not as simple on the newer car's due to LR locking the KVM.

I spoke to a few locksmiths who suggested various method's some involving aftermarket keys that they could clone the old key onto, some suggested they would solder onto and directly writing a new genuine key to the KVM but this may result in it not working as an emergency key although Andy’s experience contradicts that!

In the end mainly thanks to the wait to get it into the dealership, and taking the car on holiday soon, I ended up doing it myself.

If anyones interested:

I used a Jaguar KVM (Part# J9C16073) at £95 and then a new JLR Key (Part# LR060128) at £110 followed by SDD (Pat @ GAP confirmed IID couldn’t do it) to update the KVM software (FK72-14C104-AH > FK72-14C104-AR) and then program the original and new keys onto the car, which was around a 20minute process many automated ignition cycles and ending with verification of the keys. There was allot of reassuring verification including placing the keys around the gear selector and then SDD attempting to turn the ignition on automatically etc.

The reason for using the wrong part numbers was purely down to cost, the OEM part numbers seem to just be different revision's and they were the cheapest new parts I could find.

All in all a expensive lesson learnt, I now have 3 key's just incase I do it again

The main dealer will give a load of nonsense that the car needs a new KVM plus keys (and quote about £1,000).

Those MD prices are insane, I’ve just double checked our quote and for a L405 it was £580+Vat.

We had a play with the original module and the dealer SDD software and there was no way to program a locked KVM we even tried to reprogram it as a new module etc. There are loads of sites selling the software dumps to reset them back to factory, but I don’t have the kit for that and neither do I have the kit or patience to solder directly to the board and wanted genuine key’s not clones. All in all I’m happy with the £200 DIY approach that mirrors what a MD would have done.

Try PD Auto Locksmith, He’s Called Paul and is based in Yorkshire, worth the travel if he can fit you in. He did mine on a 2016, removed the KVM and re flashed it together with new key. He also removed the key that was lost in my case from the KVM, all has been good since. He charged me just over £200 but that was three years ago. Not sure how far he travels but he came out to Stockport to sort mine out. He also specialises in JLR.

Having had a similar scenario when I damaged a key I went down the locksmith route, all I can say is if my experience is the norm then don't!!

I ended up with 2 non genuine keyfobs (never mentioned it before the work was done) and even though I was told the emergency start transponder operates I can categorically confirm that they don't. I was never happy with them and have now decided to order up a new KVM and fobs and programme with SDD myself.

Fortunately I still have my damaged key and the transponder is still operational, this is a minimum requirement when replacing the KVM via SDD, so if you go the non genuine route and then decide to get new keys and KVM and don't have a functional transponder, you've got a problem which involves even more cost. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.
