Gearbox service ?

Hi folks

My car is at 77k so decided it would be a good idea to get the gearbox and transfer box serviced. My local garage (who I've used for years and do trust) tells me that the gearbox service inc. transfer box (at my request) was £1k !! Apparently it's dealer only supplied super special fluid.

What have been others experience on this ??

Thanks

Karl

Forgive my ignorance, who's Bodsy ? Does he have a real name or trading name ?

Bodsy is a well known gearbox flush (plus more) specialist and is a sponsor over on Disco4 forum https://disco4.com/forum/member-bodsy.html

FWIW I have my gearbox done on my D4 several years ago when I had it by another very similar mobile independent service via the forum at about 70k miles - and the gearbox was transformed, much smoother afterwards. FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

Cost me $475 Canadian for my independent to do it using <5L of Pentosin ATF8 (ZF8 equivalent) fluid and a ZF8 oil pan. https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic64124.html

There is nothing special about the transmission as it is used in many vehicles. Dan. 🇨🇦 2013 L405 5.0 SCV8

Use ZF oil, it's the only one that fully meets the requirements of the OEM (others will be to minimum specification but won't have the additives only ZF use) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314271555888 as an example.

Opinions on 'flushes' vary, ZF have recently stated they can have value but of course, that depends upon the quality of the oil used. IMO it's no good flushing with a cheaper, lower quality oil if you have to do it more often.

Also Mannol AG60 is to LR spec - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203504970860

From sister owner forums DrRob kindly had a "at home" gearbox flush day. There were a few of us that graced his driveway getting Bodsy (Ian Bodsworth) to flush our gearbox. A thoroughly knowledgeable LR enthusiast and approach him without caution. No regrets whatsoever. visiting from www.rrsport.co.uk

I had mine done by Marshall Land Rover in Peterborough. It cost £800, the breakdown being:
7 litres of oil @ £50/l = £350
Sump pan etc. £200
Labour £150
VAT £100

Figures approx from memory.

Sorry but I have had a bad experience with them. Would not trust them to change a light bulb.

England 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Loire Blue

I bought 8l of ZF8 gearbox oil and sump from a ZF distributor but only used 4.6l (oil cooler not flushed) and 2l of transfer box oil from the local JLR dealer. Cost was £480 (circa £350 if you take away the unused oil) so £1k leaves a lot for labour for what is a maximum 2hr job.

I used Mannol AG60 in my ZF8 on the L405 about 50k miles ago. It is still changing very smoothly and I shall be using it again soon.

I also used to use Mannol AG55 in my ZF6 in my L320. Never had any issues, always super smooth changes. Kev

Not that local to you but I went to Wantage 4x4 for an ATF mega flush £395 + vat - Including filter change for my 2016 @75k miles. Just for preventative maintenance. Would Highly recommend them.
