Front Disc shield defect

When I recently renewed all the front suspension arms I noted that the front disc shields were aluminium and was happy to see that they weren't horrible and rusting like the rears.

Today I took the discs off to renew them as part of the complete brake overhaul and found that both left and right shields had suffered galvanic/electorlytic corrosion where the contact the front knuckles.

My repair was to sandwich the shield between 2 M6 repair washers. This pushes the shield about 1mm closer to the disc but there is planty of clearance still.

If they had completely cracked through there is a potential for catching, rotating and severing a brake flexi.
More likely it would drop and make a horrible noise.

I think most of us will have done this at some point. Did mine last year as you describe - sorted! Thumbs Up The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

What you described about a potential disc shield failure actually happend to me while driving through Muswell Hill on a saturday morning in my 82' 4 door classic.
It started with a high pitch grating sound (i thought it was a trapped stone), got louder and louder with crowds at bus stops looking round. I tried to sit al low as possible in my seat (not me honest). then there was a huge bang and silence. the car behind flashed his lights, looking in my mirror I saw the disc shield up against the kerb. the car seemed ok and the brakes felt fine brakes so kept going in the heavy traffic, checked everything back home, I was lucky no damage was done.

Mine rotted and started making an evil noise.
20 minutes later and both removed. Never refitted them. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
