Coolant loss

Hi peeps.

Car’s been fine for the 18 months I’ve had it, but suddenly appears to be losing coolant.

What’s the most common cause for this please? Tym

If it sticks, force it. If it breaks, it needs replacing anyway.

Update… it’s losing it as fast as we put it in, but…
Engine doesn’t overheat
Heating still works
THERE’S NO PUDDLE!

We’ve just put 6 litres in… still asks for more. Tym

UPDATE: when I left it at the car care place yesterday, he’d said there was no puddle. I’ve just had it running in the drive and it’s leaking down the back of the engine and dripping off the gearbox. Little more reassuring that head gaskets or EGR cooler, but still wondering where and what it could be. Been under and can’t see where it’s leaking from. Tym

Any one of a number of possibilities - there's a lot of cooling system stuff in the 'V' of the engine, which will all result in a leak down the bellhousing.

Take some covers off and have a good look with a torch. Fortunately the coolant is bright pink so fairly easy to spot!

The a/c condensate pipe is in the location of the transmission, so don't get the air con dripping away confused with coolant loss.

The most common leak point on a 3.6 is the thermostat housing. It's plastic welded together and the plastic weld gets brittle. There are however all manner of places it could leak - EGRs, transmission cooler, oil cooler, radiator, hoses, split expansion tank etc etc, so the best way is to pressure test the system. You can just about see the thermostat housing with a bright torch for a quick inspection. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks. Deffo a leak, as it’s orange and the coolant level plummets.

Going to ask the garage to look as I can’t see anything and it’s still under warranty Wink Tym

Good luck re warranty. Cooling system leaks are normally considered gradual parts degradation. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
