Good 'ol oil cooler leak - Question!

Addressing the, currently, minor oil cooler leak is fast approaching as I tick things off of my 'ToDo' list.
Now my vehicle is just coming up to 58k miles.

What I am asking is peoples opinion of just how long this sort of repair would be expected to last before needing to be done again?

I have one garage telling me that just a seal kit is needed and another telling me that it is best to replace the complete oil cooler. I prefer replacing the oil cooler myself but are your thoughts?

What else should I be asking to get replaced to make this repair last the longest without having to revisit the area again anytime soon? I seem to remember reading in a post somewhere that there are a couple of 'O' rings on some pipe or other?

Thoughts and suggestions please Thumbs Up _______________________________________________

Having had mine (2011 L322) done by a very experienced, highly reputable LR specialist, his advice was to change the whole cooler as they can become warped (they are in 2 parts, upper and lower) where they join and will continue to leak if this is the case and only seals are replaced.

You have to remove the cooler anyhow to clean and change the seals and gasket, so for a couple hundred quid more (£360 inc vat for LR part) and 3 hrs labour, have a new OEM cooler installed and have piece of mind.

I have just done mine. I was given the same advice, replace the cooler, so that’s what i did. I believe the old one was the original so 10 years and 80k miles.

I would change all the seals and possibly some of the pipes in the area. I didn’t and still have a slight water leak that I’m chasing.

There’s also a plastic fitting above the thermostat housing that is known to become brittle and break.

Good luck 👍

Yes, as above, had mine changed in 2016. Mine had warped so needed the whole unit replacing. The coolant will need flushing out a few times if oil has got in to there.

I agree it does look like an oil cooler replacement is required to exclude issues with warping etc, although I have no issue paying to get it done I do have warranty cover tat really should cover most of it but warranty companies being what they are, WarrantyWise specifically, they can get quite evasive where oil leaks are concerned and will most likely not want to cover the oil cooler, even though my policy says it is covered? _______________________________________________

Make sure you check for oil in your coolant. This will require a flush through as Richie said and poss a new coolant bottle (as in my case).

Any further coolant leak may be the EGR Cooler (v expensive to fix!! c. £1100)

Well much to my surprise my Warranty company have stepped and will cover the cost of about 90% of the cost to replace the oil cooler, cant really complain at that I suppose. Thumbs Up _______________________________________________
