To answer my own post, after studying the innards with a torch and a hoover, I can confirm the airflow is upwards.

There are 2 sizes of wheel nuts on a L322
At a guess, your 19 inch alloys were from an earlier L322 fitted with earlier nuts, so in theory your westminster wheels will fit with the later nuts.
