Brake Disc Change

I need to change my discs & pads, pads I've done before but never done discs before (on any car).

I can follow the instructions on RAVE but are there any tips or anything I need to look out for? Whilst I'm there I'll probably do a fluid flush too.

I'm going for generic parts because I'm tight! Got it down to about £100 in Discs and £40 in Pads, plus whatever brake fluid costs these days.

not related to fitting the discs and pads but related to quality of parts.

IMHE You can get away with pattern / cheap discs but always go for quality pads, especially if you want to maintain braking efficiency. The better pads are harder and bite more into the disc and give good braking. Cheap pads are soft and can lead to glazed discs which results in not good stopping power.

I've always gone the other way, cheap pads = soft pads = one replaces the pads rather than the discs. Not had a problem with glazing I don't think, if I even knew how to tell!

I've had 28K out of these britpart pads which I thought was reasonable and there's a 3mm step each side on the disc, LR say replace the disc at 0.6mm wear each side (1.2mm overall). But I don't happen to Censored money.

Dan,
it's an easy job to do. I bought my discs and pads off eBay and they are great quality. The pads are mintex and the discs are from an OE supplier (the name escapes me now but they have a website and supply only LR parts)

front discs and pads totalled £65 and the rears were £60. He had a "make offer" function when I bought them , so I got delivery thrown in.

I've fitted loads over the years and in previous occupations, so I know cheap discs and pads when I see em.

Make sure you clean both surfaces of the discs with brake cleaner before you fit them (Its a lot easier).

Apply a coating of Copperslip on the hub where it mates with the new disc so they don't corrode together and become difficult to remove the next time.

Even though you will probably not need to remove the lower pin on the caliper, do it anyway to make sure it is clean and well lubricated...

If you are replacing the rears, just make sure you back off the handbrake shoes a long way, otherwise they will drag when pulling the disc off and you may damage the retainers.

here's a detailed description. Nothing to worry about, about same job as doing brake pad's, but just remember to do the discs with brake cleaner before mounting them.

Thanks guys, so basically there are no major pitfalls to watch for? I know in the past I've bought pads but didnt realise one needed to buy guide pins too etc.

I'll order the bits at the end of the month, thanks for the links Noddy!

I'll have a go at taking some pics for a guide, thanks for the heads up on cleaning the disc first Delta.

Island 4x4 have some Drilled & Grooved discs (x2) for 59.99 is there a performance increase over standard? Or do they just resist glazing and brake fade?

I was going to to change the H/B Shoes but have you seen how expensive they are!? Oddly enough my hb works fine if the weight of the car is rolling backwards, but next to useless if forwards. This will be the ideal time to investigate what exactly is occurring.

Your hand brake will most likely need readjusting but I can't see why the shoes need to be replaced , if you think about it really is just a small drum brake inside the rear disk and never really gets any wear unless you drive with the hand brake on and that is pretty unlikely unless the warning light switch broken. Mind you if you are in there already I guess it wont hurt either . 2008 MY Supercharged
