I've already done away with the CD changer and replaced it with a Grom BT3, the Head unit still thinks its a CD!
Anyway I can't see there being enough room to get the nav head unit in the glove box with the changer in place, maybe ironhorse can shed some light on this!

Oh and I'll do the investigations if you lend me £300 on a very long term basis  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

That is a digital to analogue converter for use with Logic 7 systems. You still need the base unit like the BT3 that I fitted

its a piece of cake to do as long as you dont rush
it will take a full and long weekend to do it
it has been in my car and working for almost 5 years now well worth a bit of effort to gain a touch screen with proper satnav,
32G of albums on an SD card
6 cd storage in hard drive
DVD player
bluetooth to phone for calls or music
reverse cam
DVT
extra audio/video inputs
ipod/iphone connectivity

and loads more stuff on it that im not the slightest bit interested in

its a no brainer just do it
you wont be disappointed when you dont have to look at or operate that piece of junk they call an info center

if you do it my way it can all be put back to standard if you dont like it

As mentioned, you cannot use the cd changer as an audio input, as the bm54 won't recognise it, unless there is one connected. The auxiliary input is the best method. It is stereo sound and clear.

All you would need to do, is connect the 2 front channels from your new headunit to the auxiliary input. Leaving it on aux mode all the time, and it should work well. This is the non complicated way.

If you wanted to connect the head unit sound output direct to the dsp, there may be a few complications. When the bm54 goes into dsp mode, it stays on one volume level, which cannot be adjusted and sound only comes out of the front channels.
So volume is adjusted from the dsp. Which means, you may need to leave the new headunit on a certain volume level. This is a grey area, as no one has ever tried feeding a dsp a different sound source.
So auxiliary is the best option.

The BMW lot have bought and sold these Chinese head units, for quite a few years now. Some audio shops have stopped supplying them, due to them getting too many faulty ones. They are improving them more and more. It was a good upgrade for people who didn't have the factory sat nav system, but most who had the factory sat nav, went back to the factory, as they couldn't stand the delay and boot up time, and the touch screen was old technology. Not sure if they have improved on that. I know the processor has been increased over and over again.
Range rovers were given all the old left overs parts by BMW, so its a choice between a mk4 nav unit, or one of these units. barisahan@gmail.com

So no good feeding direct to DSP and cutting BM54 out the loop........

So what about feeding the aux out from the android unit to the BM54 connector in place of say the TV source and fooling the system that way ?

BM54 would feed DSP as normal and all controls work, just like when the TV is feedimng the signal.

A bit of rewiring needed with this method of course.

-You don't have a left and right channel

-You would need to select TV option Everytime you get in your car. Where as aux would stay.

Seems like a good idea if it works.

I was just thinking of those people without the AUX in mod on their BM54, ie without the female RCA phono plugs or the 3.5mm jack plug like you fitted to mine.

With a bit of a rewire, they could fool the system and get whats required.

Agreed, the easiest way would be to have the AUX in connectors added to the BM54.

I understood you could not use the "factory" AUX source input (already in the BM54 plug) without the latest firmware on the BM54. Is this incorrect ? And then it had to actually detect something connected to it before it was available as a source ?

Leaving my system as is...... very happy with it.
