Still knocking!

I've replaced just about every part on the left hand suspension leg to try to stop a knocking noise on the passenger side of my RR. Not many more things I could try but I was wondering if it may be caused by an imbalance in the suspension air bags? The reason I ask is I seem to remember reading something about the suspension needing calibration?

I've replaced

left front suspension leg (new Dunlop)
both front drop link arms
suspension lower leg
both sides rear suspension bushes top & bottom
both front wheels
front brake pads
water pump & viscous fan

IT's STILL BLOODY KNOCKING!!! Big Cry Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

Without taking the Censored .... Could the noise be coming from the right hand side????
Is the anti roll bar tight? Is the tray underneath the front tight?
My knocking noise was the lower control arm ball joint. When I replaced it, the ball joint was tight, but the other end with the large rubber bush, I thought it was tight enough but the bush was slightly smaller than the original one and I had just locked the bolt up against the bracket, so the bush was loose and knocking. Previously..

Mine is still knocking too, but I'm pretty convinced it is the gearbox sub frame.

Get a rubber mallet (or a block of wood!) and whack around the subframe mounts. One of mine sounds definitely more metallic than the rest.

If I ever get any free time, I'll try something cunning with some thick rubber sheet before forking out for a new sub-frame. Bushes are not available as a separate item!

Yes to all, I've had it to the main agents 4 times & they don't know what it is, they did however part me with £3000 trying to find it. I've also had it to several independents who also can't find it. It's gone through an MOT to. Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

Contraband could be right, noises in cars can be extremely hard to pinpoint to the location. Also if one side has wonky rubbers, the other side usually has the same issue (did on mine S/C, so both sides now have new rubbers). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Hi David, sorry you've not sorted yours either, can't understand why even the main agents don't know how to fix these cars. I remember you saying it must be the steering rack last time I mentioned it, how did that pan out Whistle Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

Changed inner track rod ends - no improvement.

Decided against changing the rack as
1) Too difficult
2) Too expensive
3) Was hoping you would do it first

Anyway, go and thump your sub-frame mounts and report back!

Very Happy

David

Lower ball joint fixed mine. Had previously had new anti-roll bar and ar bar drop links, but made no difference.

I believe these motors are heavy, and you may bang around underneath with a screw driver or a pry bar, and a joint etc can look OK, but the car still makes it knock out on the road.

If you see what I mean.

Not much help I know, but just because a garage puts it on a ramp, and prods the suspension to look for wear, they still might not see it.

Good luck. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Mine knocks too, always has, done all the lower joints and drop links.
Read the BMW X5 forums, they have the same problem.

My X5 used to knock when driving at 45 degrees off of the drive (if you see what i mean) turned out to be the steering rack mounts needed nipping up. Took months and many visits to sort that one........... Whistle

I'vce had the knock too ... been to three separate garages, replaced drop links and been subjected to much poking and prodding (the car, not Me!) and no result.

I know this is easy for me to say, but, all of you.. You either have something worn or loose. Your mechanics are letting you down. They should not eventually find out what it is, they should find it first time if they are any good. Rolling Eyes Previously..

I suppose I'd better give myself a strong talking to, don a horsehair shirt and flagellate myself with birch twigs.

That'll learn me.

I'll then get on with following up your most remarkably perceptive suggestion.

Contraband's point was sort of my point, in that joints and stuff will look OK when checked by a mechanic with a bar "in the normal way", but as the car is so heavy, any wear will result in a knock. Unless a mechanic has had experience of going through, changing tons of items to find what it is, they will be a bit stuck.

Items that initially may appear OK, actually may not be...........

Garange changed a few bits on mine, and then changed something they thought was OK, as they'd done everything else...... problem solved. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
