Its funny how the subject pops up regularly in the press and vanishes again.

When I did my degree way back in 2000 it was common knowledge in the environmental science sector that diesel is in fact worse, but its also a sneaky polluter.

Remember back when you always used to see the black carbon soot on the grass at the roadside? That was the result of repeat petrol emissions which pollute fairly locally to their source. Diesel on the other hand, the particulate goes airborne fast and actually pollutes several miles from source. So although diesel is worse, the grass on the roadside looked greener Shocked

I gave my TDV8 a stern look today, that should compensate for my guilt for a bit Laughing 09 TDV8 Westminster, Mariana Black, Rear seat entertainment, hatch bag and 2 slobbery mutts

I remember reading a discussion regarding some Volvos (early V70's ?) where people were commenting on their (relative to other makes) poor diesel fuel economy for engine size.

The discussion went onto to talk about how volvo resisted the temptation to ramp the fuel rail pressure right up so as to get a finer dispersion of fuel through the injectors. The discussed theory being that with the finer dispersion came finer soot and other emission particles, and that these finer particles were getting to the point that the they where too small for the human body to be able to deal with them in terms of filtering them out of the body. So, although the emissions where finer for high efficiency engines, they actually get stuck in the body causing potentially more damage. Consequently, they kept with fatter particles which the body could process/filter ... at the cost of fuel economy.

Whether thats true of not, I'm not sure, but it makes an element of sense.

Nowadays, as much as i have had diesel engines over the years, I think nowadays they are just becoming to complicated to be worth it. V8 or else ...

Oh boy are they getting complicated!!

One reason I think I'll be sticking with an older diesel for my daily grind stuff and petrols for weekend fun! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yup. Had my head in a nissan navara engine bay (about 10 years old) and looking round the diesel engine just made me think how I wish I could go back to the simple days of 300Ti engines! They were simple, but good! V8 or else ...
