The Skiing and Snowboarding Thread

Here's me delivering some Milk Tray - and by the way, the Milk Tray lady is not who you'd expect. Having troughed her way through all that chocolate she's now really fat!

I ski at olympic level - given my handicap. I took it up in my late 30's, I'm not naturally sporty and I'm terrified of heights. This means that any decent skier would laugh at my very limited skiing ability. I can get down any piste, but getting down and skiing down aren't necessarily the same thing. It took me many years of skiing regularly to get the best of my fear of heights and even now I can still have moments of near panic, although I did get down this slope in Laax.

I don't ski as much as I used to - I used to go every weekend. But I've been busy with my house, and also I had cruciate knee ligament surgery more than 10 years ago and my knee is degenerating. I don't know how much skiing my knee has left in it. I would love to learn off-piste but I don't think I could physically do it.

Best moment skiing? Probably the first time I skied over the border to Italy from Zermatt.

Worst moment skiing? Either when a friend came over, skied 10 metres and then fell over and broke his leg, or being on maybe the longest, highest drag lift during the coldest weather. But that's skiing - when it's great it really is wonderful, when it's not it can be really horrible. But even when it goes wrong, it's wonderful to be in the mountains in a nice resort.

Anyway, this thread was prompted by seeing the first snow fall on the mountains and knowing it's less than 2 months to go before the season starts. So if you're planning any trips, want to discuss resorts, technique, equipment, travel, ski-equiping your RR, or anything else ski related please post. I'm sure there are far better/more experienced skiers than me to chip in!

Your soooo lucky you live so close to such lovely runs!

I'm trying to go this season but no one I know is going or can afford to go so thinking of trying to tag along with another group or making up a group of ransoms from a posting board in the local fake ski slope. I'd love to take the FF before it goes but thinknis may end up being its replacement Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I haven't been on skis or my snowboard for years now since we have been nowhere near decent snow. My board/boots/gear are sitting gathering dust. Skis I sold years ago, boots I still have. Did use my boarding gear when we went to Northern Sweden, the Ice Hotel though.

Would love to be in a place where boarding and skiing are within a few hours (like where we lived in New Zealand).

I used to live in LA for a year and every weekend I was up on Mammoth Mountain from early Saturday morning to sliding down to the car park and into the car going home.

Never been a real hardcore skier / boarder, I like to take it easy, have a coffee stop from time to time, enjoy lunch and the views but I do love the whole experience for a week or two and a few weekends every year. Wouldn't mind being in a place like Switzerland and going up almost every weekend with the girls. I bet they will love it Smile

Great pics mate, been there as well but many many years ago.

And your skiing technique looks a lot like mine Sad Sad

I also started around 30 by the way Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I've never, ever skied and have always wanted to.

Like many of you, the notion of skiing in the morning, having a few coffee breaks and a lazy lunch followed by a few hours afterwards sounds truly idyllic.

Looking forward to reading more. Thumbs Up Si. <This is my name.

Skiing down the big mountain in the background was tricky. Smile

I like it when it's a cloudy day and suddenly as the lift takes you above the clouds it becomes sunny.

Excellent Gaz. I've only skied in Austria twice - both times at St. Anton. The first time was the first time I went skiing, and the second the weather was terrible. I keep meaning to go and do more - I will this season.
