WARNING change your diff oil!!!

Serviced a circa 2006 SC yesterday and once again the rear diff ran out putrified, rusty, water contaminated oil... Car has only covered 70k...

I do suggest the diff's are checked (or better still, oil changed) every 30k as there seams to be a real trend with water ingress in the rear diff casings on SC's & TDV8's...

Approx 40% of the cars we see have this issue...

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED Rolling Eyes

Good advice. Thumbs Up

Craig, I've changed the diff oil in my 110 many times, but how straight forward is the SC's rear diff to do and what oil would you recommend? Si. <This is my name.

A simple filler and drain Bellini... Filler is high on the driver's side, drain is on the bottom... Obviously remove the filler first (otherwise once you have removed the old oil you are stuck if the filler won't budge!) then refill with the correct amount & type of oil (Ducky Dan's your man)

20-30 min job for a novice Thumbs Up

Mine done last week during Transmission service. All good on mine but garage commented the same; people forget them all to easily. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

On a lift is is really a straightforward job.

I get them done every other service (and checked at each service of course)

I only use LR fluids, but any branded "compatible" oil will always be better than not changing oil.

While not particularly cheap, renewing oil is MUCH cheaper than replace a diff.

Bear in mind, volumes are very small 1 to 2 liter per diff so even at £30 a liter, it is not than costly (in regards of the car's value) l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Just done mine Jay, same age & similar miles to yours i think? 19k and mine were just slightly off (a perfectly clean) colour so i changed them anyhow. So, I'm sure yours will be quite clean mate... Low milage cars suffer worse i think Rolling Eyes

I changed mine last month and both diffs dropped oil so clean it was almost a waste.
Transfer case was a different matter though... 200ml came out as opposed to the 1.5L it should be holding!!

either you check on Topix, possibly even the owner's manual prior to ordering the oils or when filling, you fill up until it goes out the filling hole.

I would flush the T-box again soon after you filled it up only 200 ml left must have worn out it so it really could do with a nice clean/flush again. l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

It's only splash lubricated, so I think I may have got away with it.
I'm guessing the 1.5L is to allow for extreme operating angles the vehicle is capable of.

I know what you're saying though, as that very thought also crossed my mind.

Adam, its not tremendously thick oil like you would be used to in a Defender! More like expensive engine oil consistency... So no real need to warm it too much pal... Thumbs Up
