Just had the FF MOT'ed at a local Kwik-Fit (probably a mistake, but they were cheap ). A useful advisory, front brake pads worn...fair enough, I'll get them changed. But two further advisories :-

1. Under-trays fitted obscuring some underside components
2. Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine bay

i suspect it is just to cover themselves, should a brake line fail under the plastic then they can say they couldn't inspect it!

never had those on mine though.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks NMJ, never had that on the 2006 S/C either. As most modern cars have plastic engine covers these days I can't understand how this can be an advisory....maybe time to do a Victor Meldrew and complain to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). If I can be bothered...... SDV8 AB MY 2019

There not allowed to remove any covers for the MOT so a lot of places do it to cover themselves....

Maybe next time you have something a bit dodgy you could just cover it up with a bit of plastic and get a pass....!!!!! Pete

FYI it appears they won't even remove a child seat in the back of my wife car to check the seat belt...! She got an advisory on her last MOT because of that. (and it is ISOFix so would only take 10 seconds to remove)

I had exactlty the same advisories. The MOT tester (independent) told me that under "new" MOT rules they should give these advisories to cover themselves. So for example, if an accident occured due to a corroded brake pipe but that brake pipe is hidden by under trays then there is no come back on them. On the basis that "trays" vary extensively by model it is not considered reasonable, nor does time allow, to remove them.

Much of the MOT is so out dated today, if a vehicle turns up with a broken windscreen it will fail the MOT. If a vehicle arrives with no windscreen at all, it would pass. Madness!

And also new is the tmps on new cars ( all not just FF's), if they have been disabled they will fail the mot! I was told this last night by Mrs WD who works at a garage, A customer was having issues with the tmps on their Ford euro box, they mentioned to disable it so not getting the warning on the dash but the MOT guy who was lissening said you cant, anything from November 14 on !

How barmy is that!!!  If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

It's all got very complicated. The MOT guy showed me the manual of things they need to take in to account and to be fair, they have a lot of hoops to jump through now.

Anyone who's (lucky enough ) to have had a P38 will remember that the ABS light stayed on after engine start up and then went out when you went above 3-4 MPH, some self test feature. But this is all stuff they need to know about, multiply it across all makes and models and there is a lot to take into account.

One thing is for sure, the days of taping over or taking out the engine managment, ABS lights are gone. These guys check that all the lights come on with the ignition and that they all go out when the engine is started. 2006 4.2 SC

The basic rule is the tester is not allowed to dismantle anything, they can only test by what they can touch, feel and hear.

Noting that covers are fitted is just a backside covering move by the tester. ie. if the tester passes your car and then a mile down the road you're stopped by Vosa and they discover you don't have a cat fitted for example and say the car shouldn't have passed an MOT. The tester is covered because he/she has noted covers were fitted and they were unable to see that a de-cat pipe had been fitted.

Theoretically you can have virtually worn out brakes, so long as they pass the brake test. Depending on your wheel design and the type of splash shields fitted to discs, it might not be possible to tell how worn the discs are without removing the wheel.

My local indie has just dropped the wife's Cooper S off after testing it this morning and I've been teasing him about an advisory he's noted -- "001 3mm remaining on o/s front tyre"

I said you lot were onto him and even he admitted that with the current annual mileage (2500) that tyre has years left in it!!

He did say though that with the way the MOT regime is set up they feel as though they'll have their collar felt if they don't list something!!!
