Speed up your PC/Laptop

My desktop PC was getting a bit slow especially at start up and I guessed it was more to do with the old hard drive than RAM or CPU as it has a quad core intel chipset and is rarely overworked.

I decided to add a 500GB SSD hard drive and move the operating system to that drive. I then formatted the old HDD disk removed the system partition and and reassigned it as a 900mb Storage facility for my dropbox/photo/music etc.

Just to be sure I also added another 8GB of RAM taking the total to 12GB.

Well the pc/system is now lightening fast booting in about 5 seconds instead of 5 minutes. All pc actions are really snappy as the system resides on the Solid State Disk (SSD). Literally no delay on anything.

If your doing this helpful programs that may be needed are Macrium Reflect Free Addition to make a clone of your existing Hard Driive and MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 9.0 to get rid of unwanted partitions after formatting the old HDD drive.

I also gave the drives new Letters so they sat in the right new order.

Best thing I have sorted for a while.

Thumbs Up

Solid State is def the way to go and as much RAM as your system can handle (keeps swap files to a minimum if using Microsoft O/S). Got a MacAir with 500gb SSD and it is lightening quick and all the work PC's are now Lenovo's running Win8 with SSD's Thumbs Up SDV8 AB MY 2019

Unnecessary quote removed

I'd personally have chosen a slightly larger drive... Whistle

Seems measly to my next work machine: dual Xeon E2680 v3 (total of 24 cores or 48 if you include Hyperthreading) and 128GB of RAM, only a couple of small hard drives but will be raided. Boot time largely irrelevant as it won't be switched off.[/b] Ed

Highlighting the relevant bit didn't work on my phone very well. Was trying to point out the 500 milli bits for his hard drive. (I presume Gary meant 500GB). Ed

Yes sorry 500GB SSSD Drive....

You only really need the SSD disk for the Windows System to run on to really speed up the machine as file/picture storage is fine on the HDD disks. 500GB is more than plenty. Thumbs Up
