Breakdown - Mass Air Flow Sensor? (Update - Blown Turbo!)

Just getting off M25 yesterday after an hour on the motorway without problems or symptoms. Tried to accelerate up the off ramp. Load 'pop' sound then no acceleration and wouldn't go above 30-40mph. Whilst running it is very smooth. Just no acceleration.

Pulled over checked turbo hoses. OK. Called AA. Fault Code: P010C Air Mass or airflow sensor B. Low signal. Amplitude too low. AA man unplugged the sensors but no improvement. Lots of black smoke.

Car now on truck on way to main dealer. Being Bank Holiday no idea when it's going to get looked at.

Any thoughts? Could this be EGR Valve or Turbo related or will changing the sensors do it? The 'pop' sound just before is a bit worrying Big Cry Just hope it's covered by the extended warranty I have.

By the way AA were very good. First response within an hour. Took me to Enterprise car hire so I could pick my brother up from the airport then I went back to car and Flat Bed trucked turned up an hour later. All that on a Bank Holiday Thumbs Up 2012 5.0L S/C

Still sounds like a turbo hose. It would be worth taking the hoses off, and checking them fully Thumbs Up

Thanks Mikey.

That was my first thought. Believe or not I had spare hoses with me and changed them both on the spot. No change. 2012 5.0L S/C

That's not so good then Neutral

There are some other rubber hoses in the boost side of things, but I have never seen one of these burst before

Black smoke indicates over fuelling, or lack of air, be it a burst hose or Intercooler, or a restriction in the intake. Let's hope it's something simple

If you unplug the MAF sensors the car will still start and run smoothly but will NOT have any power or go over about 20 mph. (Your symptoms) Not sure if this helps you though. I presume the airbox/filter and pipes are all secure and not split/loose.

Interesting. So it could be the MAF Sensor after all and unplugging didn't help diagnose the problem? I guess I just have to wait for the dealer to find the time to look at it and hope for the best Rolling Eyes Any idea if MAF sensors are covered under the extended warranty? Thanks for comments Thumbs Up 2012 5.0L S/C

They are only about £75 each and take 5 minutes to fit but they rarely just stop working so it may be something related. An air leak seems most likely.

Thanks. I'll just have to wait and see what they come up with. Just passed the dealer this morning and by coincidence my RR was being unloaded by the AA having spent the night at Fleet Services. I'll have to wait a few days for the diagnosis and will update then. Cheers. 2012 5.0L S/C

Just got the call from the dealer. It's a blown turbo. Probably £2,500. Hopefully it will be covered under the LR Extended Warranty. As it's over £2,000 they will probably send someone to inspect. Fingers crossed...... 2012 5.0L S/C

I don't see why it wouldn't be covered. Even the cheap ones cover major components like a Turbo.

Was there any sign of suboptimal performance including above average fuel consumption or black smoke? ______________________________

Loud pop then no acceleration. Black smoke later but didn't notice it at first. Still waiting for warranty confirmation Rolling Eyes 2012 5.0L S/C

Hi Nomad, is your MD Westover Christchurch or is there one in or around Ringwood? I am in Christchurch and have been using Westovers and cannot seem to find a local LR indy.

Hope your warranty pays up Very Happy

I've been using Westover for years. Overall I'm happy with their service. Recently I've been using BLR, an Independent on the way to Poole, for oil changes etc. So far so good. They are always very busy which is a good sign.
LR Warranty have confirmed they will cover the work so now just have to wait for it to be done.... 2012 5.0L S/C
