Pirellis with M+S written on side - any good for winter?

Hi

Just a bit confused here. My car has Pirelli Scorpions which I think are all weather and have M+S on side for mud and snow. I know they aren't winter tyres as they don't have enough grooves but would they be OK for Austria where it is a requirement to have winter tyres as I am travelling there next week?

Thanks for your advice

M+S markings are OK for winter conditions in Austria (even though M+S doesn't really mean anything and they're not winter tyres).

Bought a new set of Conti winters - better safe than sorry!

Especially as I will be going up a few mountains in Austria.

Even though M+S are probably acceptable, you're better off with proper winters Thumbs Up

Don't forget that you'll still need to carry chains for the mountains.

The M+S on the tyre means the tread design has some capability to clear mud or snow from the tread if the tread is deeper than 5mm . Some countries may accept them for winter use and most will not .
They are not true winter rated tyres . True winter tyres have a little pointed ALP mountain symbol with snowflakes on the sidewall and some will actually have the word winter embossed . The rubber compound will remain flexible in cold climates .
maybe google search winter tyre markings to see what I mean .

Not sure on socks for Austria - I always carried chains though I never had to fit them. Rear only on the L322 - no room on the fronts

I'm sure I still have a set in my garage - I will have a look

In Austria, from 1 November-15 April, all vehicles up to 3.5t may only be driven in ice and snow ‘wintry conditions’ if winter tyres are fitted to all four wheels.

Snow chains fitted to at least the two driven wheels are an alternative if the road is covered with ice or snow.

Trucks 3.5t+ must have winter tyres fitted to drive axles during this period whatever the conditions (up to 15 March for ‘omnibuses’) and carry snow chains.

By law, a winter tyre is only one marked M&S, MS or M+S. There’s no mention of the Three Peak snowflake symbol. However, ‘All-Weather’ tyres marked M and S are acceptable.

The regular fine is €35 but can be as high as €5,000, and your car confiscated, if the case goes to court. Read the full requirements here. https://www.help.gv.at/Portal.Node/hlpd/pu...31001.html

I drove to Austria in 2011 during the biggest storm to hit Europe in years. Had Pirelli m&s tyres on. Never put a foot wrong even in deep snow. Perfectly good for most situations.
