Gear selector issues

I've noticed that over the past few weeks that my gear selector has been stiff when moving between P and D when the car's cold.
I've also noticed that even the slightest forward pressure will knock it out of D and into a false neutral. It seems that even a couple of mm movement is enough for this to happen.

Anyone got any thoughts? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I'm thinking that Stan but was hoping this had been seen before. I read that on the petrol cars, there's a linkage mechanism bolted to the outside casing of the gearbox but it's inside on the diesels.
Perhaps a liberal spray of WD40 (other lubricating sprays are available Whistle ) might help, just need to know any spots I need to avoid. Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

You’re thinking there of the earlier models with the 5-speed transmissions where the inhibitor switch on the GM 5L40-E (diesel models) is inside the casing whereas for the ZF 5HP24 (petrol models) it’s on the outside. You have the ZF 6HP26 transmission and, as Stan says, it sounds very much like the cable clamp has seized in its hole in the selector lever underneath the car preventing it from articulating as the lever moves through its arc.
