TDV8 won't start and the solution!

My TDV8 which has been parked up for about 6-8 weeks wouldn't start yesterday despite having charged the battery.
Now the battery and alternator were both new 18 months ago. Worryingly it was doing odd things such as sounding the horn, operating the back wiper and flashing the headlights every time you turned the ignition on.
Checked the fuel rail pressure with the schrader valve and the pump was working. Thoughts of ecu failure came to mind.

However I reckoned it was possible, despite it being fairly new, the battery had over drained and died. Disconnected it was reading around 11.6V. As it was a Yuasa with a five year warranty I took it back to Halfords who tested it and pronounced it had died. By the time they tested it the voltage was down to 10.3V
Full kudos to Halfords who replaced on the spot without a murmur.
Fitted the new one and it started literally first kick.

So moral of the story, start from the basics and never assume based on what you think you know, in this case that the battery was new so would be ok.
On a practical note do not leave these cars standing for any length of time without being plugged into a battery conditioner. Ridiculous but these cars drain down pretty damn quick.
Hope this helps someone. Rehab is for quitters!!!

I fitted a new battery a few months after purchase and all was well for a year, but my non-starting problems have started again recently. Since this appears to be a common problem, I would have thought that LR would have designed the multifarious systems to eventually shut down apart from the bare minimum such as the alarm and remote sensors. 2019 Range Rover P400e

Good advice Dijit. A CTek charger is ideal for trickle charging especially with the winter approaching It does have battery recondition function too but not sure this would heal a fubarred unit. Worth investing in a CTek5.0. Thumbs Up 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

Is your 2010 TDV8 in the VIN range LM306631 to LM334416 ? If so, has it had Service Action Q159 carried out by a dealer under recall?

Mine had a similar problem and only after investing in a CTEK I discovered that the recall (software modification to prevent excessive battery drain on shut-down) had not been carried out on my car. Once Q159 accomplished I've had no further problems - but I still plug in the CTEK if I'm not planning to use it for a few days! Smile

Any idea of the years these vins cover?
I wasn't aware of this but the main dealer says all recalls are up to date. Rehab is for quitters!!!

Check if your battery has AGM stamped on it! If it has, it will have had the recall as they replace batteries during the Service Action from old type Lead Acid to Advanced Glass Mat Thumbs Up

Craig, my car is a 2010MY, battery flat as a pancake this morning, my chassis number ends 307210, do I just contact main dealer to action the above? I take it they only action after requested by an owner?
