Hit standing water fast & hard

Hi all, as those of you who live in the North west will know we have had another day of rain of biblical proportions. Long story short I hit some 'proper' standing water at speed. I now have a rattle , scraping noise from the front nearside as if I have bent or dislodged some heat protection or similar. Noise can be increased when loading the car on one side when turning and also in time with the cars speed. Anyone know what this is likely to be and where I need to look in the morning ?

plastic wheel arch liner rubbing on a tyre i expect.

But this kind of fault is normally pretty obvious once you lay underneath and start bashing stuff with your hand.

My money is on the wheel arch liner - possibly grill section at the front of it?

Good luck Thumbs Up Back in a Defender!!

Its definitely metal on metal rattle and scrapping ? Does the wheel arch lining have any metal ? 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

All plastic i think. Could be a water shield on one of the brake discs.

We can guess all night, once you get under there and start bashing stuff i don't think it will take long for the loose part to let you know. Very Happy

Agree with dolphinboy. They crack around the bolt fixing points and break loose. I discarded mine on my Td6. Never noticed any difference and no problem on the MOT. That said they are there for a reason so best to repair if it turns out to be that. Cool

+1
The bolt holes rust out and the bolts pull through, penny washers are the easy fix although I think you can get 2 piece ones now that don't require hub removal to replace them

Yes to this, ours did the exact same thing recently, sounded awful when driving the car as well! Backing shield had rusted and the bolts had pulled through the plate.

They're often referred to as splash guards, grit guards, water shields, heat shields and more often than not, rattly bit of tin on the back of the brake disc. Laughing

In different vehicle manufacturers parts catalogues, they're given all sorts of names.
