TD6 Torque converter, is there an H/D option?

Just when I thought that it couldn't get any worse...... the car has started a metallic rubbing sound when creeping... the last time I herd this was when the gearbox f.u.b.a.r.'d Big Cry

I'm thinking that the torque converter has worn out, again, and I'm rather miffed as I've only do 21K since the rebuild Sad

So what to do now? I could get the converter recon'd again, but is there much point as I can obviously kill them in 20K.

Does anyone know of a Heavy Duty torque converter that's readily available in the UK, or someone who can build me one? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Don't know about HD but I believe these people have a good reputation. Might be worth speaking to them if you haven't already.

MR GLOVER...........4.2 or 5.0........when I do 35,000 miles per year........... Towing......... By my reckoning that's an increase of £4240.00 in fuel per year and an extra £200.00 road tax........ That will buy me 2 gearbox rebuilds and a few standard torque converters to boot.

Weegie, bud, it's not the quality of the work, and the specialist that I used to do my box was well aware that I needed Heavy Duty everything that was available.... It's just that I'm the only prat in this country to tow 3 tons for 15 / 20 K with a Range Rover.... and the good old French cheese built GM 5L40E just isn't up to it Big Cry

I need either a heavy duty torque converter or a different gearbox, or I might be forced to do something Japanese Big Cry Big Cry And I really really don't want to do that. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Nice idea, but the budget wont stretch to a TDV8 yet, and all the ones that come close to being the right price need 2 x Turbos and 2 x EGR's, which then pushes them 4K over budget. Plus there is no real difference in the fuel consumption, until you get in to the realms of the 4.4's, and they is just too much dosh Big Cry

There has got to be a solution somewhere, I've just got to either find or invent it Sad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Iirc a guy in Oz got a heavy duty one. IMO rrphil or Mackies transmissions in Glasgow would be your best bet and also the gearbox remap that's available from a seller in Germany would help as it will lock up earlier and reduce wear. At that mileage and towing id say you should be changing he fluid and filter every 18months ideally if not 3 years.

How many miles are on it currently and may we ask what you tow? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Well I've only managed 14 months since the re-build and it's all gone Pete Tong, the car is showing 126.5K and it was rebuilt at 104K, so I ain't done too good Big Cry Big Cry

As for what do I tow...... CRAP?????????........ Mobile toilets....... 8' wide and 10' tall and around 3 tons in weight.

They are as aerodynamic as a block of flats, and about as heavy Laughing

This will give you an idea, I pulled the one at the back, it's around 7 meters in length!

I will admit to contacting the chap in Australia who makes the Roadblaster Torque Converters to see what the pain level is and how long it will take, got a feeling that it's going to be an eye watering reply Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Shipping won't be fun from Oz but then if your towing that is be one id go for it ask the BMW guy if he can produce anything stronger for your application 👍

Mines on 160k and just had another gearbox flush in my ownership but also a filter as I supplied the bits.

I'd also get the Sonax valve block. Not cheap but will help a lot.

I've done some towing in mine admittedly not much mainly a twin axle compass rallye 635 a few times and cars on trailers about once a year but have also dragged stuck arctics from wood head pass and a broken down one blocking a junction, admittedly in low box and very gently!! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Are those tyres general grabbers or Pirelli ATR's?

When they did the torque converter did they fully flush the box? It sounds like the valve block has worn and caused more slip after he TC was done and thus more wear on the new one Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

kingpleb, the tyres are General Grabber AT2's, I've covered 30K on them now and they aren't showing any signs of wear and they are very good in the wet, can thoroughly recommend them. I know someone with the same size on an Isuzu pick-up and he's managed 80K with his and they are still legal Thumbs Up

WHEN THEY RE-BUILT the GEARBOX.... they did the converter, so it didn't get a flush, but it was stripped and cleaned Thumbs Up

MR GLOVER Shocked Shocked WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked

During 16 years of employment in the bog game, I had to suffer the harshness of Nissan Patrols and then I was up graded to Landcruisers, which while they were a massive improvement on the Nissan (except fuel consumption) neither are a patch on the Range Rover.

The really annoying thing is that I know a few peeps that run 8 speed Disco's and they are not having any problems at all, in fact come to think of it, they didn't have any probs with the 6 speed version either. I just wish that there was a way to convert the ffrr to a ZF box, or a Getrag manual like the X5. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
