If you have oil on TOP of the cooler then i would check the oil filter assembly first as that screws onto the top of the cooler sir Thumbs Up
Its only plastic so can crack, there is also a rubber ring/seal that should be replaced with every service/oil change... These go flat or square shaped over time and then start to leak Thumbs Up

Sorry Craig. Probably wasn’t clear enough. The oil is accumulating on top of the aluminium assembly that the oil cooler bolts on to hence why i mentioned the cooler or gaskets. Although I will certainly check the oil filter at the same time. The most important question for me is do I need to drain coolant and oil to change cooler gasket? Chris

.

carpcat, is it like this?

if yes, you have leak between oil cooler and oil filter housing. it is best to replace both gaskets

I got my from Dan at Duckworh Parts.

When you remove air inlet plenum loosen oil filter housing - two turns will do- so the oil can drain back to sump, remove bolts and lift the complete housing up.

here are pictures of what it looks like,

it is very much straightforward job. try and lift the housing as level as possible to avoid oil and coolant spill. Thumbs Up

Yep that’s exactly it Nino! I’ve ordered both those gaskets. Thanks for the confirmation. So as it’s high up on the engine, I’m assuming oil and coolant don’t need to be drained? Chris

I take it there is little danger of dropping a load of oil into the coolant or visa versa? Presumably they are relatively separate? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

,I did not. After I was done I used garden sprayer (5L in my case) to spray HD degriser round parts and in to valy pan, drove car on to ramp and run garden hose for a while to clean oil leaks, but expect to smell oil for some time to come. Thumbs Up

NMJ, if you remove compete unit - no, if only oil cooler - coolant will spill but is easy to clean before it goes inside engine. I use my vacuum pump to suck up oil and coolant from heere.

Nino brilliant photos and write up!

And anyone doing their oil cooler like this should replace the o-rings on the union circled in yellow. This is the issue originally posted on this thread (scroll right up to page 1). Details of the correct, high temperature o-rings are posted back there too.

With the airbox and pipes etc out of the way you can get to it so easily, it's normally so hidden when you do the o-ring jobw ith everything in place.

Love your ramps too Nino!

Greg Cheers, Greg

Greg, those are the "famous" O rings. it all started with bunch of us having oil leak in the back of the engine and it was good old Cam-Tech- Craig Bow down that pointed us to the culprit. For me it was a life saver because there no range rover mechanics in Bosnia. have to love the forums and good folks who help. Very Happy Thumbs Up

Sorry guys, been out of the loop lately.

Nino was a great help when I did my cooler gaskets too, so all of the above is exactly what we did.

Since you have to take the inlet manifold off, you may as well clean it, but be aware, the crud that comes out gets everywhere and i'm still finding bits of it in the garage even now.

You may as well clean the MAF sensor too since it has to come out. The best stuff to clean is spray brake cleaner.

I didn't drop the oil or coolant (since I already had oil in the coolant), so providing your careful and have an endless supply of rags, you should be fine.

Mike
