Alarm keeps going off - neighbours not happy

Evening all, I know that this topic has been covered before however I have just done a search and mine is behaving a bit differently to the others described on here. The alarm goes off for no apparent reason. It generally stops when I unlock the doors, apart from once where it kept sounding however I was able to start the car and drive it with the alarm going off (it is the electronic beep rather than the horn sounding). Only several lock/unlock cycles eventually stopped it. I have modified the bonnet switch with a bit of extra plastic and this seemed to work, however it was going off most of last night (so I was informed by a neighbour - I didn't hear a thing). I then disconnected the wire to the bonnet switch (albeit without closing the circuit) but it went off again. I have since locked the car with the partial arming (i.e. pressing the button twice)but it has still gone off. This is not happening all the time, and the only thing I can think of that seems to be consistent is that it appears to happen after I have washed the car. Could water be getting in to the fuses or some other part of the electrical system? If I use the paper clip method to close the bonnet switch circuit will it stop? I am going to try and get it sorted tomorrow but for the sake of neighbourly relations a temporary solution for tonight would be much appreciated! Thanks 1982 SIII 88” diesel

If its anything to do with the bonnet switch then just unplug it. I did with mine, it's not gone off mysteriously since. Discovery 4 HSE

Isn't the beep when something inside the car sets it off, and the horn when something outside sets it off?

If so worth checking you haven't got anything "moving" in the car, or anything big and bulky. I had trouble with a couple of black bags of old clothes I was taking to the charity shop. Kept setting off the interior alarm. Eventually had to take them out. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

Thanks for the suggestions. Don't think it's the bonnet switch as it is disconnected. There is nothing moving inside the car either. A mystery! 1982 SIII 88” diesel

The door latches contain the alarm microswitches, if they are getting wet? That might be your issue??? I would spray some WD40 in each and then open and close the doors a dozen or so times before finally slamming each door hard... Try that? And at least it it does not work! Your neighbour will not think your lazy! Whistle

Worse case scenario (check your ign key works your door lock) then open your bonnet, pull the bonnet pin switch up and lock the car. They disconnect the battery lead and close the bonnet Thumbs Up

Try locking it with a different key fob - we had a weird problem with ours where one fob would lock it OK, but the alarm would go off regularly - the other was fine - I since replaced the faulty fob & have had no issues since.

!

Thanks, will try that too! Craig, which bit of the door latches specifically need spraying with WD40? 1982 SIII 88” diesel

If that doesn't sort it, there could be a broken wire(s) in the door loom, I'm not familiar with the door switch operation, as to whether they are switching to live or earth, if they switch to earth then a single wire could be causing the fault. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... They are usually switched to earth Miggit, that way when the car goes to sleep it does not affect battery life sir Thumbs Up
