So I got my car back with new turbos on monday. Noticed yesterday that the retractable side step on the passenger side isnt working. So i got under the car to take a look and found that the power connector had been disconnected and tucked away. I reconnected it and the step came out, but when it went to retract , the second arm behind the motor is pulling back and leaving the step. From having a feel it seems that there are 2 big chunks of metal either side of the motorised arm missing . Like it tore off the step.

Now these worked perfectly before I took this in for the turbo work, So i suspect they disconnected it. The step is still straight and moves freely, so it wasnt hit / didnt run over anything. Has anyone ever seen this ?

Would you be blaming the dealer or can these things just happen. Current Vehicles :

Got the arm back in , its holding for now, is it possible to just buy this section of the step bracket ?

Usually the car has been jacked up and down a couple of times, the EAS has self levelled a number of times (lowering itself each time) the car has then started and either the left side door was not closed correctly or the step didn’t retract before the car was driven (maybe off the ramp?) and the lowered suspension coupled with the non retracted step you cet a bang as the front of the step hits the top plate of the ramp and snapped step!

Only did it once and luckily it was on my own car! Rule is now, start car, place in off road height and i won’t move them until its achieved

wot Craig said. more or less the same thing happened and I ripped my nearside step clean off.

mine were worn out anyway so I swapped them for new ones.

by the time you buy the brackets at rrp you aren't far off ebay prices for complete sets

I sympathise as I have experienced this sort of thing with previous cars. You leave them to be serviced, repaired or even just MOT'd and when they come back there's a scratch, something missing or just doesn't run as it should .

What really annoys me is that, if the garage knows it has done something to your car (as seems to be the case with your steps as the power was disconnected) then why the don't they just fess up, admit it and offer to put it right. I get that these things occasionally happen (just like when I kerbed SWMBO's brand new car after just 2 days ).
