Well new lock arrived and fitted it today and all is working correctly again.
I also had a look at the old lock to see what is involved in getting one opened if all electrical functionality went belly up. so hope this might help someone in the future.
First of all you will need to get the door card off or opened enough to get in at the lock. I doubt that is going to be possible without damage to the card.
Here is a pic of the lock. The mechanism on the left hand side encircled in red has a black plastic cover on it which clips off. You will have to clip off the button pushrod from the green plastic fitting first and then get that cover off. The cable from the interior door handle also passes through this cover but you should be able to release the cover enough to get at the mechanism.
When the door is locked, button in down position, the metal lever with the green plastic clip for the button pushrod is in the down position and in turn it pushes the black lever behind it upwards shown by the red arrow.
Pulling the Button upwards simply moves the metal lever away from its backstop on the black lever and so does nothing to unlock the latch.
Its the black plastic lever behind that operates the whole locking mechanism.
Push this downwards and now door is unlocked.
