FFRRs versus the world

Many years ago I witnessed a P38 in a head-on collision with a metro (shows how long ago it was) where the metro driver stupidly turned into the path of the rangie at a junction. The p38 went over the top of the metro writing it off and the rangie came away with a scratch on the front bumper. The police couldn't believe the p38 had been involved when they turned up. I just wondered if this safety design was incorporated into the l322 - ie the thing that makes a safe car is its ability to drive over any other cars foolish enough to go head to head.... QUID FACIUM TIBI

didn't the P38 have a ladder chassis like the Classic? that would make them pretty tough.

Australia 2007 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

Hi

I was in a queue of traffic last weekend, stationary and someone in a Toyota Corolla drove into the back of me.

Quite a hard impact, (woke up the kids). The Toyota driver was texting and not looking where he was going.

I got out thinking OMG, but when I looked at the rear bumper, there was a scratch and that was about it. The front of the Toyota was caved in.

My repairs: Bumper removed and resprayed, and a park sensor replaced which had been damaged. Fortunately I was in Neutral gear.

Unfortunately, I had removed my rear dash cam for cleaning so do not have footage, just my luck. Confused

Cheers, Jerry THIS WRECKAGE

I remember reading, back when the Classic was a new Range Rover, that they had an excellent real-world safety record compared with other vehicles on the road. I think it was down to the mass of the car.

P38 vs Metro. Everything else equal, mass wins. Now, FFRRs (all models) are pretty heavy, tough/strong, and well engineered. Remember, those safety crash tests (brick wall, etc) simulate a crash into an identical car of equal mass. That tends to overestimate the crashworthyness of lighter than average cars and underestimate that of heavier than average cars.

I don't want to be in an accident, but I feel safer in the FFRR than I did in my trusty old 1991 Toyota Tercel.

The old chassis of the Classic P38 etc was worse than the monocoque of the 322 and 405... too rigid and no crumple zone, this Discovery is similar to the Classic and P38...

As you would expect the 322 was a lot better

And the 405 even better...

I have - many times - but it impresses me every time I see it Shocked

The L405 video that Pete posted is also very impressive - the slow motion gives a really clear idea of the speed that those airbags deploy Thumbs Up

Yeah, you can see why cars that have had a smash are never quite the same again, see how the rear doors and rear wing flex, and the ripples in the rear part of the roof and even the tailgate in the overhead shot... Thumbs Up Pete

Shocked

All very interesting (except for the VW - that was terrifying).

I'm impressed with both the L322 and L405. The D2 wasn't bad - the passenger compartment seemed okay, but the front door now seemed about way inches too long for the opening. Hmm. "State of the art" does move on...
