New L322 New Problems! ie no Transmission Range Change

Hi Everyone,

I've just joined the site as I've just bought a 2006 TDV8 and I can see I'm going to be discussing a lot of problems with it! Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction on a few things.

In a bit of an impulse I picked up this RR as it was going cheap (high mileage), but looked good and the issues didn't look to hard to resolve.

In short, here are all my problems:

1. Reversing Camera black screen

2a. terrain system faulty

2b. transmission range change not available

2c. No hi/lo ratio

3. PDC sensor fault

4. LH side stem under trim half missing

5. LH Rear brake and disc need replacing

6. handbrake doesn't auto release in D - should it?

Now, all of that I can deal with fairly easily except for Items 2a - 2c. Which I'm guessing are all problems with the same root cause.

Transmission Range Change not Available flashes up on startup, however the car still drives fine, albeit with no special programs available. Having trawled this forum and others I've:

- changed out the battery to a new Bosch S5 - didn't clear the problem.
- checked all fuses - all fine.
- checked the Transfer Case ECU for obvious wiring faults, corrosion - all looks perfect.

I need to get under the vehicle and check the connections to the transfer case itself.

Is there anything else I can check for myself? I'm trying to clear as many faults as I can before taking it to a specialist. I'm on the Isle of Wight in case anyone knows a good garage on the Island.

Thanks for any help you guys can give, Dan

If it were a TD6 I would suggest removing the transfer box motor and bench testing it (search for powerfuluk video howto in youtube) - not sure if things are the same with the TDV8?

There is a removal howto in the wiki for earlier cars

3rd party replacement transfer box motors are now available for significantly less than an LR one! .

That's great info. I'll check that out. I'll do everything else I can before pulling large components though. A diagnostic read out would be pretty helpful to narrow it down too, what's the most basic setup (by which I mean cheapest Very Happy ) that can read fault codes? Would the ecu need reprogramming after pulling and reinstalling or replacing the drive motor?

Isn't that the later and cheaper transfer box motor? The one with 4 bolts I think. ECU shouldn't need programming.

Or perhaps invest in an IIDTool to get the exact error codes. Could be something as simple as a sensor. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

If you have a TDV8 with the 6-speed gearbox you have the Magna Steyr DD295 transfer box : http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic12404.html

Phil, thanks for that link, that is an unbelievably helpful post. Really helps to see the components in the 'flesh' rather than just in the manual.

All the part numbers are fantastic as well and will save me a lot of time if I need to order parts.

Alan, thanks, I may have to go down this road, was hoping not to have to invest in a code reader, but could save some time narrowing down which component is causing the issue.

Thanks - on looking through Phil's post on the transfer case, this later unit seems to have the position encoder and drive functions as separate sensors. So I'm guessing if the position sensor needs changing the Case ECU needs to be recalibrated to a new unit but maybe not for a drive motor change.
