Replaced water pump on 4.4 V8 and have this left over?

This was in the tray of coolant that i had underneath the engine while fitting a new water pump. It could have been from ages ago and has been washed out by the flood of coolant or it could be something important. Any ideas?

This is the seal from the water gearbox cooler connection. There are two of them.
This is likely to be an old one as otherwise you would have a pretty big water leak from the gearbox cooler.....

Thank you Phils,

That is brilliant news. I have not disconnected the gearbox cooler and there are no leaks at the moment so it must have been an old one.

After fitting a new alternator, then water pump, then refitting the water pump with a better non leaking gasket, I have decided I might as well get back in there and do the 80C thermostat mod. Just waiting for the parts to come from Europe.
