ABS Sensor ? car randomly breaking itself (Issue Fixed)

Hi,

Little advice,

driving along normally and suddenly front right wheel seems to brake by its self quite hard pulling car to the right llike when do hard brake and ABS kicks in (like ABS Jugger). but i was not using the brakes at all.

straight after doing it the car pops up HDC inactive and Suspension error.. locking suspension..

pull over had look make sure nothing stuck in wheel so on all fine restart car and issues and warning all gone so i thought all ok..

then it did it again... driving alot again but slower speed and front right wheel feels like it locks up and ABS judders..

error pop up on dash again, stop restart errors gone..

now does this sound like the ABS sensor is failing on right wheel making car think braking and triggering itself or anyone hard or seen this issues ?

Thanks alot

Yep. mine did the same with a rear one, new sensor and all sorted, I got a pattern one local as couldn't get a genuine one for a few days and it was a total waste of money, lasted weeks before giving up, new original one from Dan and been fine since... Thumbs Up Pete

Thank you ! great will have to get one ordered do you know the OEM part number out of interest ?

sensor most likely started to fail after doing nearly 600 miles weekend just gone as had last minute trip to wales ! and was raining 90% the time.. and not even going to start with the two and half hour delay on m25 way back home !

thanks again 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

They don't mind the mileage or weather... Did an 800 mile trip in mine last week, including leaving south London at 3pm on Friday to head north... M11 way was out as the Canning Town flyover was shut messing up NE London so I headed up the A1 to join the M1, took 4 hours to do 16 miles.... I remember why I left London in 96 now......!!!

Getting the old one out is fun, chances are it will be rusted in, I had to drill, then die grind the old one out, you have to clean the hole out until the new sensor fits in with NO resistance and bolts home with no effort otherwise you will ruin the new sensor... Be careful not to damage the reluctor ring at the bottom of the hole, it's not a hard job with the right tools but can take a bit of time to do...

Genuine one comes with a sachet of grease to aid fitment.... Thumbs Up Pete

This thread is opportune!

Last week on the way home from the indie after buying a new radiator, I touched the brakes as I entered a roundabout and got a screech from the front right hand corner which appeared to have dropped slightly. I didn't know what happened but after noticing the ride from the front right seemed a little harsh, I checked the EAS lights near the switch and noticed they were all extinguished.

On subsequent applications of the brakes at low speeds, it felt like the front right wheel was locking and skidding or going into ABS judder. When I got home onto my gravel drive and touched the brakes, the front right did lock and skid - I could see the drag mark through the gravel.

The IID Tool listed a number of faults but these are the most telling:

ABS Brake Module
1/10x8A
Air Suspension
System CAN Error

EAS-Suspension
1/10x64
Articulation
Validity Fault

Now to find the culprit. I'd previously had Air Suspension Inactive but not noticed if there was a corresponding ABS fault. I was about to buy a new front airbag for the right strut. Ron B. VK2OTC

Is usually a height sensor...

Read the live values from the wheel speed sensor (ABS sensor) and see what it says... maybe hard braking on that front wheel is showing up a dodgy height sensor... Question Pete

So i replaced both front ABS sensors, which took the whole day !!!!

You are right about them being bloody rusted in they did not want to come out.. end up with drilling out very carefully so not to damaged the metal abs ring... and then cleaned out the rust and put new ones in..

went for drive and did the same thing straight away.. went home reset them and check no grease got onto the abs sensor front all was fine.. when drive again and seemed ok...

then Check brake pads popped up.. now there discs and pads are basically new still as recently did this..

checked all the ABS and two brake pad sensors all fine so dont know.

will see how it goes if not will be dropping of local range rover specialist again which know me by first name terms....

unless any other advice to check ? 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

I have the brembo upgrade done to the car, only year and bit old.. the pins were brand new when i installed and look good... :-/

Its random driving along and then suddenly will brake for me feel from both side on the last time it happens.. ABS judder the feeling..

did also when was braking slowly the pedel started pushing my foot back and forth like ABS is kicking in.. but i was not braking hard and the road surface is dry.. so no reason for abs to kick in. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Check the connections where the pad warning wire plugs in, in the wheel arch, give it a good clean... Thumbs Up Pete

Hi,

So scanned the car for codes, Have yaw code which when reset come straight back see below what could this be ?

Also looking live data see one height sensor voltage seems crazy high ? could this be the issue ? left front

Also see video showing steering angle sensor error when turning right ? (sorry about voice i have lost it with a cold and finding it hard to speak !)

any idea what other live data to look at ? 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

I had a similar problem of the brakes applying themselves which I can only think is the HDC kicking in after I picked mine up from its MOT.
I think if the RR has been on a ramp with the wheels hanging down the height sensors get used in a place not used before and they pick up some kind of dirt or corrosion which throws the system into fault.
Also that day it was raining heavily after I picked it up and the EAS inactive was the first fault that showed up and as soon as I cleared it and reveresed off my drive the drivers side wheel would lock and then I would get EAS, ABS and HDC inactive and then it would drive ok. I reset it about 5 times after it did the same thing and then it went away. My error was also showing as wheel speed sensor so I also cleaned those but they were quite new but pattern Censored ones. It has not done it again in over a year now.
If it has been on a ramp then maybe the ABS sensor cable gets stretched somehow.

Looks like faulty Yaw sensor, it's here..

And yes also looks like a height sensor failure..

Think I'd be tempted to do the height sensor first and see if it clears the Yaw fault... You never know...!! Pete
