You may start changing oil every 5K km like i do, and there are so many other thinks you can use that sucker for.

So stupid question time, I take it without the dipstick on the 2011 you will be going in through the oil filler? Take it you can still get all the way to the bottom with it?

Sucking the old oil out is simple.
The engine has a tube in place specifically to suck oil out without the need to crawl underneath to remove a sump plug.

Excellent, thanks for the quick reply. I may look at one for the future, as I would like to change the oil every few months/5k ish myself. I am with you on the old and bad back part Looks like a really handy bit of kit.

Simbad... Pretty much the only way to change engine oil in a 2011 & newer FFRR is to suck it out... Its how JLR designed them all now a days

I was aware of the hose method, but because both Adrian and Nino have said in previous posts just how easy and clean it is to suck the old oil out, and I am getting a bit old for crawling underneath, I opted for the sucking method and intend to do it twice a year.
Opie have got 15% off service packs at present. I have just got 10 litres of Shell AF L. plus filter for £ 80 incl delivery.

Greg, first time I changed oil in my car was like that, bit messy, then i realise that the same pipe i disconnected to drain oil is the pipe you hook up the sucker to extract oil, soo same thing - you get same amount of oil out either way. i do drain oil from the small pocket above crossmember (every 3d oil change).

as for changing oil at 5K km intervals, it cost me only 70 quid - filter included ( mobil 1 0/40) . and it is fun ( and I can swear she runs sweeter after).

Sure - seems like there are benefits to sucking.

I'm a bit jaded having changed the oil many many times on my boat (twin engine, so double the fun) where normal practice is to suck it all out through the dipstick. Marine engines don't tend to have sump drain plugs. You normally hook up a 12v oil pump then wait while it refuses to suck for 20-30 mins then eventually using some kind of black magic it starts to pump out then you babysit it for an hour to make sure the pipe doesn't pop out while pumping then you try to work out if you've sucked enough using the various bottles you've filled then you do the filter and then do it all again on the other engine.

The whole time, every time, I'm just thinking I've love to drop the oil using gravity alone using an old fashioned sump plug.

But maybe this oil pump out pipe on the our 4.4's is a bigger bore than the dipstick tube on my Volvo Penta marine engines and it's a doddle. You guys make it sound so.

For just £70 or £80 (Great deal from Opie!) - it's the best bit of maintenance you can do right?

I've only done 4k miles in mine since Feb when I bought it. So 5k / annual seems good for February. I'll do the trans, diffs and transfer box too.

Mike, where do you get rid of your old oil? Local garage or does your council have somewhere?
