L322 ZF 6 speed gearbox failure

Fantastic. My RR learning curve steepens as at 109k my gearbox has developed harsh shifts and a multitude of error codes including 29, 30, and 35 (5th and 6th). Local ZF agent diagnosed 2 failed clutch packs and the torque converter, with a rebuild the only sensible long term option. Sad

I had just purchased the fluids to do this asap but it seems fate has overtaken this decision! Rolling Eyes

I spoke to the original owner after I had bought it (probably a mistake). I asked him if he had changed the gearbox oil and he cheerfully told me it was sealed for life. My sense of dread upon this news appears to have come true.

I do hope all buyers obsessed with stamped service histories take note, a dealer FSH will most likely mean the box has never even been glanced at! Censored

Hello mate is it not worth doing a gearbox oil change since you have the oil and filter and sticking some dr tranny or something in , might be a cheap fix or may get you a few thousand miles before you do a rebuild
Thumbs Up

RRPhill is the gearbox man on here.
He can advise what's best.
Normally harsh shifting is down to the soleniods on those trannys. A flush may well sort it but Phill the man to listen to. Thumbs Up 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

I have another car with the same ZF box and a few less miles so I can use the kit on that, it wont be wasted. Doesnt really matter if its now or a few thousand miles, I havent got the wonga and it will be going on the credit car anyways!

The ZF specialist has been around a few decades and seems to have a good reputation (unlike some other villainous outfits I have used in Newcastle Shocked ). They said there is a queue of cars with the same codes and the same failures at this mileage, indeed I lost count of the amount of dead (pretty modern) cars outside their unit.

I will find this RRPhil and send him a a PM for a second opinion.

This is just a tea and sympathy post really! Big Cry

Hey I am so sorry to hear the news - wow I am speechless Shocked

WHY OH WHY do LR in all their wisdom ( when they spend millions on R&D ) say the gear box is sealed for life !!! - Its complete and utter Censored

Do they think we are all ******************** ( yes I am not going to say what I am thinking )

All it is - is a mere 10 liters of oil - hell we spend £100K+ on a car of our dreams - to find out later that the gear box has gone !

Thank goodness we on The FFRR have this forum - after all we are the true enthusiasts of the Range Rover brand - We are the guys that buy the product - without folk like us their sales would be half !

We are the folk that show other road users - how immaculate and well cared for a Range Rover can be.

My vehicles have had the gear box oil changed every 50,000 miles - as I knew 10 liters of oil Spinning around would self degrade - how dare someone say - ' oh It's sealed for life ' - and YES I have heard Dealerships say this.

This makes me so annoyed indeed.

I suggest that all members on here with their FFR - change all their oils - at half the mileage that LR recommends -
DO IT YOURSELF - and YOU KNOW ITS BEEN DONE !

Once again - Lester sorry to hear your bad news - we are all with you Fella

And once again - STAN Thank you for keeping this site going - without you we all would be stuck !

This is my list of ‘standard’ issues with the 6HP26 : https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post477453.html#477453

Will your transmission drive okay in 4th, 5th and 6th gears and it’s just the shifts that are the problem? I’m just wondering, in your particular case, about issue #1 on the list.

Phil

Filled for life Rolling Eyes

Here's a few pics of oil on cars I've flushed over the last week...

6HP box in a Discovery 3 with 95k miles

8HP box in a Sport, with 37k miles

Aisin 6 speed box in a Freelander 2, 118k miles

"Filled for life" is purely to reduce leasing costs. When Td5 were out, they were one of the most expensive cars to lease due to a major service, including transmission oils every 24k miles

Official advice from ZF is an oil change between 50-75k miles for the 6 + 8HP boxes

More often of doing frequent towing, high speed driving or off roading

I'll be honest, I had a new cooler in hand, and our local engineering place machined them up for me using the cooler as a template

I have a 4.4 TDV8 in in Monday, I'll try them in that to see if they are the same Thumbs Up

A few YouTube vids on flushing machines.
The windows are 'IN" and "OUT" I believe, i.e. old vs. new fluid.
My ultimate garage would have one of those machines.

. Cheers, Greg

The machine is connected in series to the gearbox cooling system

The gearbox then pumps out the old oil, the machine measures the amount coming out, and automatically replaces it with new oil

The difference in the pipes is old oil v new oil

Thumbs Up
