Upper Glove Box lid MY07+

Right, this is a bit of a strange one and the damn thing must know I want to sell it.

For what ever reason its come up with inspection on the dash, when I had it serviced last year the garage thinks they didnt reset it properly. Anyway, in a vain attempt to try and reset the service indicator (not possible on this one it appears!) yesterday I let the battery get a touch low and it popped a couple of errors on the dash when I tried to start it.

Anyway, got it started and took it for a good long run to make sure there was plenty in the battery etc. (all errors gone of course)

The only problem is I think during my messing the top glove box randomly opened and it wouldn't shut again. I eventually managed to shut it as normal but it then wouldn't open from the button. Pressed it many times as you do.

10 minutes into the drive the top door randomly opened and then it wouldn't close again. Its almost like the latch is somehow out of synch with the rest of the car. Eventually you are able to close it (as normal) but we then get the same issue where it won't open again.

I can't seem to find any information on the internet about anyone who has had a similar issue before. I havn't tried it as yet but I thought about doing the battery off "hard reset" trick that people talk about to try and sort it out.

Does anyone have any better ideas? 2005 E60 M5

I have tried a battery off reset but to no avail.

Interestingly I have had a think I remember it randomly opening at the weekend so I think me trying to reset the service indicator is unrelated.

I have been out in it most of the day and the actuator randomly actuates as you are driving along but does not seem to respond to the switch in any way.

The lower one is fine and when you press the button the actuator does what its supposed to do, when the door is open pressing the button still makes the actuator actuate! Whether the top door is open or closed the button does absolutely nothing.

To be honest I'm not a fan of taking these things to bits so I really don't know where to start! 2005 E60 M5

Possibly, I've got the workshop manual and had a read through it for removing the glove compartment to get to the latch doesn't appear too bad although the switch is a little more tricky by the looks of things. I think I'm going to have to find a specialist to take it all to bits to see whats wrong.

Parts are hard to find, none listed anyway! Probably best finding an MY07 breaker. 2005 E60 M5

Does it just prise out? I wouldn't want to risk damaging it further. Has anyone removed the button? 2005 E60 M5

Yes, it just pulls out. Use a credit card or similar to protect the dash and small screwdriver and pry it out.
I had a problem with both glove boxes not opening at all when I bought my FF.. It was a faulty "switch".
I say "switch" because its actually a module that works with BCM. If you have no other BCM symtoms then I'd say its the switch module. Test the actuator first though as it could be that. Just unplug it and put 12v across it.
Think I paid around £90 from a supplier but try Dan @ Duckworths first. Maybe cheaper. Then it needs diagnostics to program it.
I will see if I can find the part number on the box.

Great stuff thanks for that.

Yes I currently have no electrical issues with the car (and to be honest never have had in the last year!) The complexity of this module makes sense based on the price of it. I was hoping to find a second hand one if I'm honest but they are not easy to come by.

Do you really have to program the switch? Bloody hell, would this be an IID tool job? Or Main dealer only?

The actuator appears to work OK as it does release just not when asked! 2005 E60 M5

Yeah, I don't think its the actuator either. Its just a solenoid.
Posted the part No in post above in case you missed it.
At least you can access it as mine were both closed and would not open. took several hours of creative dismantling to get them open so I have an intimate knowledge of their operation.
As regards the diagnostics, mine still did not work after fitting the new module. Some weeks later I took the car in to have a new key programmed and when I got the car back it all worked. Thumbs Up

Sandyt, I share your sentiment. Ridiculously over complicated. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

Well that took the grand total of 9 seconds to remove. Jesus, looking at the LR manual its about 20 hours labor.

Interestingly it looks to have been out before.

Now, the switch looks immaculate with no obvious damage to any pins etc. I have removed and reconnected the switch and it makes no difference to the operation of it. As in the lower still works perfectly but the upper does not. I have left the switch removed, and both doors are shut so it will be interesting (and I hope!) that both are still shut in the morning.

Just out of interest does anyone know if a 2012 switch is the same? As I have a doner car, I mean dads Westminster, that I could possibly borrow a switch from to try and see if it works. 2005 E60 M5

2012 are different dashes and instruments. The part No states from 2007 to 2009, so I would guess not. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal
