My FFRR Has Disgraced Itself Today

Now pretty hacked off, I bought a new removeable tow ball for my new to me Rangie and was looking forward to a few days away. Tow ball arrived special delivery, the right one so i fitted it, went to storage to pick my caravan. All went well until I went to plug in the lighting. Look at the state of the wiring, it's a wonder there hasnt been a fire.

Do any you good people have details of which fuses and where cover the standard towbar, looks like im going to have to spend some time on this. Routing of the cables would be nice to know too so I can splice a new one in.

Many thanks in advance.

Shocked

Hard to think what would have even caused that

In terms of routing, My cables ran through the spare wheel well

Was the tow bar frame fitted and the electrics when you bought the FF and can I assume you did not fit the electrics?

On our 11MY TDV8 the connector for the tow electrics is in the wheel well, against the rear bulkhead on the nearside. It's a grey multi pin fitting. We fitted the Westphalia bar and a 13 pin socket which simply goes through the FF hole into the wheel well and pugs in. You can then use a 13 pin plug or a splitter to give you two outlets, a 7 pin for vehicle lighting and the other for charging/powering the 'van. I assume that any other manufacturers bar simply uses the same type of electrical fitting.

If your FF is the same then you should be able to replace the wiring, links may help.

The bar was already there with the sockets, a square hole in the middle to receive the fitting the the removable Westfallia tow ball. I purchase those items new because the one supplied was seized solid and no way was I risking the towball falling off with 2 tonnes of caravan in tow.

If I can find the car end of the wiring and disconnect it whilst i arrange new 12n / 12s or a 13 pin socket that would be brilliant. I'm quite happy to do the wiring, I just need to identify the fuses that are sure to have blown.

Thanks for your help, I will keep you updated.

I think it's going to be quite a mess, I just hope it's not damaged any modules involved. BMW i3 Electric Car

Thanks for that I'll have a look and check it all out, I may as well upgrade to 13 pin plug at the same time.

Worth changing to a 13 pin. IIRC there are at least 3 fuses to do with tow electrics, 2 in the boot and 1 in behind the glove box.

I’ve changed all 3 at various times.

Thanks Ian, I think thats where I'm heading, I'm all prepped for swapping the caravan over to 13 pin so I may as well do the rangie now. BMW i3 Electric Car

Remember that 13 pin Euro socket has to work at MoT time - it is checked as part of the test.

Twin 7 pins are not checked

Depends whether yo consider the MOT check a good or bad thing.......

I’d buy a pre wired and resin filled 13 pin socket and make the connections inside the car.

It had definitely been on fire the wiring behind the plugs. Ive traced the wiring to the connector in the sapre wheel well and having replaced three fuses now have appropriate lighting signals. Just need to trace out the fridge, battery charge and rev light signals and can wire the new socket.

Hell of a mess.
