EGR Sensor C fault 3.6 TDV8 - Help required.

So driving home from work earlier on today the engine management light decided to come on.

After a quick scan with the IID I get the following fault.

P140A-21 (2C) Exhaust gas recirculation sensor C - circuit low - General signal failure - signal amplitude<minimum

Question is the sensor part of the EGR or separate?

It has previously had both turbo top hoses replaced so don’t suspect a split hose problem.

suggest you update your car details Jamie
Don't think a 2003 4.4 needs a turbo hose!
. Cheers, Greg

When our EGR’s failed, one of them had a similar fault - the resistance for the egr position was all over the place so the car was getting duff readings in terms of commanded vs actual. The other side was mechanical when we stripped it down it was worn, and notchy SDD showed this as erratic behaviour as it stuck and released etc.

TDV8 around 80k - no symptoms other than a fault code so we stripped them back and they certainly needed replaceing.

Thanks I suspected it maybe the case that the EGR is on its way out. The car has done 84k so have been expecting them to go soonish.

Have read Edfors guide on here for replacing the EGRs, and also someone locally who has done a couple TDV8 EGRs to give us some pointers.

Having priced the parts up at my local Service Centre/Parts Supplier and they come in at £500 with the gaskets.

Do you have access to SDD etc if so you can see the live data and even manually command them to check out the theory without lifting a spanner.

If you shop around you will get the price down, I think we paid £350 all in for genuine units Thumbs Up

It was a afternoons work, it’s all fairly straight forward. One thing that surprised me is how clean they were no build up at all.

Worst part is removing the 7 nuts and shield from each side. While you are there, I would check everything else over such as the thermostat housing for cracks, leak off pipes for diesel leaks etc as I’ve had it stripped to the same level 3 times now Shocked

Yes have access to an IID, is what I used to get the fault code had planned to use it to test the EGRs but the dark cold nights have put me off something for the weekend.

Hi new on here & new to FFRR ownership, quick question when the EGR starts to fail why not just remove like others have done ? Seems the cheaper option & removes the issue. Or am I missing something ?

I considered it, and while it’s probably fine it just didn’t feel right. Not to mention while highly unlikely if it did get picked up on a MOT it would be a absolute ballache under the new rules, and we use a fairly strict place Embarassed

For us if it buys us another 80+k I’m happy with that... nothing in the grand scheme of ageing FFRR ownership Big Cry

That would probably be my call too, keep it stock & legal. Slightly off topic I notice you live in close proximity to me, just about to go to Alan Smith garage for full service. Who do you use & do you or anyone else no Alan Smith in Derbyshire?

To be honest we have looked after our own for the last 4/5 years & 40k including servicing and maintenance. Mainly because when it's in bits I like to the the opportunity to clean components up paint them, dintrol them etc. We have more cars than people so are able to have it off the road as and when required. Its actually been ok to work on so far, and we have the support of a commercial mechanic and my old man who's pretty handy! It also means the money saved on labour can be spent on some of the more niggly stuff that needs to be done.
