5.0 supercharged smoking

Hi guys going to look at another l322 2009 5.0 supercharged but the question is the dealer says it smokes and has restricted performance? So other than the head gasket that is could be any thing else that could cause it to smoke? Also had the chains done 30k ago
Thanks bill

There are many reasons an engine will smoke, the colour of the smoke is helpful to narrow it down but there is no one cheap reason...

If it's for sale as a project then I imagine all the cheap fixes have been tried and it will be a costly repair...

With the cost of a replacement engine, or a rebuild, it would have to be given away to make financial sense.... Pete

Cheers Pete. The dealer hasn’t said what colour but I’m guessing it’s white. Just a guess though. It is spares or repair it’s on eBay but I swear I’ve seen it before on here or eBay a while ago I’ll put a link in it might jog someone’s memory lol. It’s up for 9k but he will take mine in as part ex. He did say it had the chains done so want to see proof. This is the link

It is a tidy looking car but that interior has definitely been tarted up. Ivory seats don't look like that after 115k miles.

It's had no MOT for 4 months and has only done 100 miles since it's last MOT in 2022. It's done virtually nothing for the last few years looking at the MOT history.

I wouldn't let the fact that one has had the chains done sway you too much either, they might all have to come apart again to repair the smoking issue.

It could be something as simple as a sticking injector or as in depth worn piston rings causing the smoking. There's not enough information being given.

However, £9,000 for that car is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much. It's essentially a spares or repair car with no MOT. £9k is retail money for it!

Is there a reason you're drawn to that car at that price?

I might be out of touch with prices, however, I'd be expecting to pay around 50% of his asking price for a car with no MOT that needs engine work. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I've only glanced at it, but, compare it price wise to this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/155560986815?ha...R7jIvdKSYg

They're virtually the same mileage but this one has had thousands spent on the car already by the sounds of the advert and in the grand scheme of things, isn't much more expensive.

Yh I did see that about the mot and it did cross my mind thinking why and also has been through bca as it’s got a unit stocking finance on it. So there are a few flags drawn up. I’m thinking that the chains may not have been correctly hence the smoking but again not sure.
Yh thinking about it, it does seem quite expensive.
Only reason drawn to it was because it’s ulez compatible and has the updated interior.
That’s why I thought I would ask on here first see what people think.
I got a feeling it ain’t gonna be an easy fix but thought no harm in looking. But I swear I’ve seen it before because of the number plate

I wouldn't touch that car because of the unknowns - but to set your mind at ease, unit stocking finance is nothing to worry about - it's a specific category of finance used by car dealers to provide funding for buying stock, and it's legally required to be cleared upon sale (or before). 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.

The EML is on, what are the codes?

If they aren't willing to tell you that it should be enough to tell you that it is one to walk away from!

I imagine the fault will be "restricted performance" but I doubt it will give a fault for why... Rolling Eyes Pete

Well been there today and engine is knocking and bloody hell it’s smoking thick white like a cloud behind it from it. Something badly wrong with it. But just thought I would let you know also took a video of the engine if anyone wants to see it.

Definitely not a 9k car then!

Could be anything from injectors, head gasket to big ticket items.

Potential project car but not at that price!
