@JayGee ; please would you be able to expand a little more on the C1 cf C2 oil spec ? …..

I was watching Sam’s Motor & Machine on YouTube last evening where it was commented that “ C1 has now been replaced by C2 and then C3 “ I use Smith & Allen C1 but was wondering if I should seek out a C2 or C3 specked oil if C1 is old hat.

Here’s the video, the oil service is about 30 mins in. Note that Sam does talk though his oil spec choice considering his recent EGR/DPF delete.

C1 is low saps (addatives that form ash that can't be removed during the regan process and are ultimatley responsible for how long a DPF can work before it's soot capacity or flow capacity are compromised) for DPF equiped cars. Sam no longer has a DPF so can use any oil of the correct viscosity or a different viscosity as he has chosen. While technicaly you shouldn't use C2 or 3 the difference between low SAPS and mid SAPS on the remaining life of your DPF ( and car) is arguable. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Mannol oil is great oil - I use it for my business, but unfortunately they don't make a C1 specification oil. The main reseller of Mannol in the UK are Carousel.

For the 4.4 TDV8, it's 5W-30 C1.

Smith & Allan 5W-30 F is C1 specification. Petronas 5000 FJ is also C1 specification and has the correct 5005 approval, my personal preference. From Opie, it's about the same price as the Smith & Allan at the moment. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hi all

I think that Mannol is a very under rated oil

This is what I use in my TD6 after contacting Mannol HQ for advice.

This series of posts got my attention so I spent a few minutes googling and it seems that ACEA C1 is now an obsolete reference so I guess that in time it will disappear, what then should I put in my Range Rover . Geoff

That's not actually true. C1 has not been superseded by C2 and C3. They are different specifications. C1 has simply been dropped as a managed specification by the ACEA. It has not been replaced or superseded by another specification. Kev

I haven't looked at prices recently as I've been using S&A but I bought 20 litres of it for £46.49 back in 2021. Kev

I wouldn't worry Geoff, manufacturers will continue to produce oil to the same specification. They may not be permitted to label them as 'ACEA C1' but they may be able to label them as 'equivalent to ACEA C1'. Kev
