Oil extraction pumps and pipe lengths

I am looking at purchasing an extraction pump to change the oil in my FF myself and I am just after peoples general experience of the many different pumps out there, so a couple of questions to help me make up my mind;

Is a 9l one sufficient? I see many 9l ones but it is not obvious looking at the them as to whether the container is marked on the side in 1l increments or similar or even look like it would be obvious looking at it as to where the oil has gotten up to?

They all seem to come a number of different of size hoses but it is not always clear to see what the lengths are and with it being a RR I am assuming the pipe needs to have quite a reach? or do the pipes interconnect?

I am interested in which ones people have bought as there are so many on Ebay in the £30-40 range so maybe have to question the quality and I have looked at a Draper 10l on that is significantly more expensive to the tune of £130+, big difference.

Any recommendations on anything that fits the bill?

I am very happy with the Draper 10L if you can afford it then you wont be disappointed.
I alway get least 10L out even after putting 9.25L in Whistle (Fuel Dilution) Big Cry 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Yeah that is what has been playing on mind. I think the 4.4 oil capacity is 9.4 Litres? And I would expect a little more to come out as well due to the dilution so that is why I was thinking 9l wont quite cut it if I dont want to be having to empty the pump as I go along. Is the Draper one marked with measurements down the side? And how is it for pipe length? Neutral

Hi,

I use a Sealey 6l hand pumped vacuum extractor. I have to change the oil in 2 goes as it's typiccaly sucking out 9 to 10 litres each time. It's half the size of the 10l version. I think it's bout £70 now, had it for years, I think I paid £50 for it.

I use a 5ft fexible plastic tube, plugs directly onto the extractor tube, the standard length was just a bit too short.

Doesn't take long when the oil is warm, 10 -15 minutes probably, I'm changing the filter while it's sucking it out, empty it out @ 5 litres into a 20 litre container, start it again, get a cup of tea. Fuji White 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westmiinster

What diameter is the extra tubing? is it 10mm that would be required?

Hi, can't remember the diameter of the pipe, it's not very thick, just measure the tube with vernier and buy tube that's a little too small. Engine & oil will be warm / semi hot (remember this is plastic we're talking about) so you need to make it very snug or the tube will just soften and either leak or fall off when the vacuum lessens.

Edited: Forgot to mention, you need quite rigid thick wall tubing or the vacuum will just collapse the tubing.

Been there, very messy.

Mine has had a good life, over 7 years, but I would recommend fully, but a suggestion that you get a permanent marker pen and mark up the tank, because the plastic strip soon becomes detached.

I bought a Sealey S01168 Vacuum Extractor that has 9 Litre capacity so can almost do a RR sump in one go. The good thing about the air compressor run extractor over the manual one is you can walk away. It'll cut off if it fills up but I always time the first 2l out and come back 3 times later to drain 7 to 8l of waste oil. It can then be left to do its thing to finish up pulling the remainder.

Any oil extractor will come with a few different tubes and one of the Sealey kit fits the extractor tube nicely. I bought my one on a car parts special for £60 when they retailed at the time for £120. So its best waiting for a special price (around autumn time) to come by on whichever setup you decide on.

I've used it for doing fluid changes on PAS systems and ACE fluid. It's also good at sucking oil out of diffs, axles and gearboxes.

I use this 9L version (a lot of them appear to be rebranded versions of this) and very happy with it at £50, but the tube is too short.
