the second link , i agree the thing looks flimsy but the american ones that go into the ranges tow hitch look pretty substantial..

another thing i just thought of is, if you do get a trailer it might get nicked if you leave it at the camp ground..

The Nato hitch on the adaptor is illegal, the hook is not approved and cars post 1st August 1998 need approved equipment.

As to towing in france all FFRR's when towing are limited to 56mph as the potential train weight is over 3,5 t regardless of the trailer weight that being towed at the time.

Of course you could take the risk ! I have the same quandry with my Sankey BDR Camping trailer but I look at it as if I were in an incident it would be just my luck that the insurance would not pay out due to unapproved modifications

The French speed limit whilst towing is the biggest disappointment, I had planned to hoon it down to the South of France next summer with a trailer carrying all our camping gear, but 800 miles at 60mph does not sound like fun.

If I'm going to be speed limited I may as well tow a caravan

Justin, we took the Tintent over 400 miles into France a few weeks back. The bit about 90KM/h is not too keenly enforced
The road surfaces aren't rutted like ours so no issues with swing caused by wheels dipping in and out of the ruts. I was doing 80 at points, not specifying KM/h or MP/h in open forum you understand.
Wouldn't be overly concerned about the type approval BS for the towbar either. Mine wasn't even picked up at MOT despite having a Dixon Bate height adjustable with a home-made bracket for the bike rack. Nobody ever looks twice at towing gear on a Range Rover. Probably attracts more attention if it's not there TBH.
