Dead pixels are a common problem - the joints on the back of the circuit board where the cable is attached dry out and lift. The cables are basically glued on. There are DIY solutions available, but you will need a steady hand. Alternately, there are mobs out there that do reco and change over units.

I did the MID radio display myself by replacing the ribbon cable. I dont think I have the guts to do the speedo, so I think I will be sending it to the place linked above.
