In car wiring etc

I posted this on the Defender forum, but lots of you here also know what you are doing. Any help gratefully received.

"OK< apologies for the total noddy questions but its been years since I did any of this and I want to do it right rather than half arsed like I used to.

Have ordered some MUD side panels for the rear and 2x LED lights that they sell to fit onto them (The small ones) . I also want to buy another standard interior light (Got the one in the front) to mount in the rear headlining area.

When it comes to wiring them up, should I be piggy-backing them off the front light or, taking a live feed piggyback from elsewhere and having a seperate switch?

Whats the best way to do this and how exactly is it best done? I used to use those nasty little blue clips that splice into a wire and take a feed off it (scotchblocs)

I'm hoping it's not a complex job, but the simplest of jobs have a tendency to spiral into 5 jobs.

If you want them all to come on at the same time i.e. when the front door opens then piggy back of the original, there is not a lot of power going through them so it would do no harm.

My preference would be to run a separate fused feed to a switch then onto the lights, that would give the best control as you can have them on without the front light having to be on

Any pointers on how to actually set up this separate fused feed, what parts I will need etc?

There are several ways to do this, again if it were me I would look at the fuse box and see if there was any available empty fuse holders then buy the relevant parts to make the holder actually work as it should, were talking a pound or two in costs for a fuse and holder.

Wire from fused side of fuse box to switch, from switch to lamp, double up on the lamp and run to next lamp etc. The lamps I would expect to be earthed when you screw them into the bodywork

This way you only run a single wire and going from the original fusebox keeps it looking standard.

+1 above: plus I'd also rather stick a soldering iron under my fingernail than have scotchlocks anywhere in my car.

Horrible nasty things, a wire break waiting to happen.
