Most reliable petrol engine.

Hello all,

Will be in the market soon for a newer Range Rover-currently have a P38.

Which is the more reliable petrol engine-the BMW or the Jaguar ?

Regards

Steve

2011 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

Hi Steve,

Welcome from a relative newbie. I am sure the guys will be along with their usual excellent friendly help.

In the mean time, my £0.02...

I think that the Jaguar engine is more sturdy, The BMW units are fantastic but I believe that they used a modified M62 engine from the 5/7 series which incorporates a VANOs unit (electro mechanical method to advance/retard the timing to increase power & torque)- If you test drive one and it's a bit leggy listen out for a sound like a biscuit tin full of marbles as you rev hard then back off.

I know that the BMW units also had issues with front diffs although these were cured by a recall so check if it's had it done.

The Jag engines have 20hp more for the N/A 4.4 and appear to be faring well; that said they are all younger than the BMW engines so time will tell!

That said I am a BMW fan but for me the JAg edges it,

Lads, where did I go wrong/ miss out?

Steve

United Kingdom

There is a load of information on this very subject on the RRNet forum, there was a thread which ran into many pages - best doing a search there. You will find a load of info over there as it is a US based web site and the US only have petrol RR's whereas the bulk of RR in GB are probably now Diesel.

I would go for an 06 facelift vehicle so it would have to be the jag engine.
