really daft question, but how can you "lock up" a gear? FFRR TD6 HSE

You may be right but it really depends on how the box has been treated. I have heard tales of flushes/oil changes actually causing problems in boxes that were previously working perfectly.

I guess its a risk either way and therefore personal choice Thumbs Up

Absolutely, oil degrades over time as well. So old oil is going to be duff even if it's only driven low miles or driven lightly. It loses it's lubricating properties.

Beyond 50k miles, I'd say that oil shouldbe changed as a preventative measure.

As a slight aside, my mini has had 2 owners including the wife and we got it at 30k miles in immaculate condition. It's been driven lightly and the gearbox was rattling at the diff recently. Changed the oil and it's a new car. It's only done 50k miles. Reason? 8 year old fully synthetic oil worn out. The gearbox also says sealed for life. I don't think so. V8 or else ...

I have an engineering background, so I don't believe that any oil or transmission fluid used in a car lasts for ever.

I change the (red) transmission fluid and filter every year and it drains out a murky brown - so something is breaking down (hopefully not the gearbox). If changing the transmission fluid is going to dislodge lumps of cr*p then hopefully that would have happened with the initial double flush a few years ago however. The gearbox is noticeably quieter and smoother for the first month after a flush too - so it seems to like it!

Just had mine fail after 170k Kms removed and sent to The Gearbox Co Joburg very happy with the service took six weeks as we had to ship from Graaf Reinet and over Easter period cost of box repair R13500 plus oil and removal and refitting. The box gave very little warning, went from no reverse to complete failure in under 300Ks

My first gearbox 5L40E runs 150tkm, than I bring the complete car to LR-Parnter, they want 6.900€, I bring it on trailer to a friend, we buildt it out, I change the oilcooler and the pipes!!!, he bring it to a specialist in germany, incl. new!!!!!! torque converter and new oils and transport I paid 2.000€ cash + my invest oilcooler + pipes = 2.400€ cash, and today with 200tkm it runs like on the first days, other STUPID guys didnt chance the cooler, they only take flush..., ánd the little metal parts come back in the heart of the gearbox, after 30tkm the same procedere as eyery year...
