iPhone 4S network question

We're spending a bit of time in Ireland of late, sorting out father in laws affairs. What I want to know is- will an irish Three SIM work in my wife's iPhone 4S, which is locked to Three (contract)in this country without having to unlock it?
What I want to do is, buy & bung the aforementioned SIM into her phone next time I'm there, top up enough to have the all-you-can-eat data on The One Plan, and then we can use it for all the stuff we do here without worrying about data charges etc. I can tether off it with my iPad and laptop as well.

From the 3 website ….. if any use to you

Roaming in Ireland.

If you're in the Republic of Ireland (ROI), you can make cheaper calls and send cheaper texts to the UK when you're roaming on the Three Ireland network. Calls to the UK cost 10.2p a minute and texts to the UK cost 11p each. You won't be charged to receive calls or texts.

Terms and conditions.
To get these rates, you must be roaming on the Three Ireland network. ROI 10.2p prices apply when calls are made to standard UK mobiles and landlines beginning with 01, 02 and 03 only.

Standard roaming rates apply if you're not roaming on the Three Ireland network, if you're calling special numbers, or if you're calling or texting in countries other than the UK, including ROI, from Three Ireland.

Our ROI 10.2p rate doesn't apply to internet data. It costs £1.28 per MB for using the internet on your phone or with your Mobile Broadband dongle.

Just called Three- they state that to use an Irish Three SIM, the phone has to be unlocked. Seems strange when it's the same company.
£15.32 to unlock it Rolling Eyes 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Plus you do know that on certain phones once unlocked when you insert the next sim card , the phone locks to that specific network , a lot of these phone unlocking shops don't tell you this ……

I don't mind paying £15 - its cheaper than another handset. However, when I had a 3GS on 02, they didn't charge me to unlock the handset.

Mick- I have tried another SIM card in. I tried the one out of my 4S. It's deffo locked.

I've ordered the SIM cards from Three.ie and had them sent to my mother in laws address in Ireland. Just a quick unlock and we're good to go. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded
