First car for my 17 year old boy

My son will be turning 17 next month and has already been on about his first set of wheels.

My question is, what do you think would be the cheapest to insure?

Thumbs Up

Not looking forward to the same thing in 12 months time for my boy.

Daughter turned 17 last year, I bought her a £1K V reg Ford KA (bit of a rust bucket underneath though). Set up insurance in her name £600 Third Party fire & Theft. I believe the boy will cost @ 2 x that!

To date she has not put a dent in it, although did scrape her wing mirror down the side of the FFRR once! Passed first time 9 months later.

Her friends have Clios, Saxos, Aygos, Peuguot 106s

Best of luck! Thumbs Up .

Here you go. This might help:

For what it's worth, having seen my friend's young son killed in his first car (a Citroen Saxo) at 30 mph, I'd suggest you buy the safest car you can find for your budget.... Graham

If you can afford one (they're still quite dear as quite new) the Toyota Aygo are about the cheapest car to insure.
Citroen & Peugot also do the same vehicle, but not sure on what they're called (C1 probably)

I shelled out about year ago for one for my daughter. Still costs about £500 a year (it was cheaper on fully comp would you believe when learning, but now 3rd party F&T after passing), but it was £1000 cheaper to insure than a beaten up old Micra or Corsa ! Shocked So I thought best to put the money into the vehicle rather than into the insurance Thumbs Up

edit - meant to say, it can make a big difference to postcode from car to car too, so the only way to be sure is go on something like gocompare and try a few different cars out to see what it'll be. That's what I did to find out the Aygo was the cheapest for us. You also want to try it on when they're a learner & also when has a full license. As you probably know once they pass that's normally when the premiums go up hugely ! Big Cry

I was working in someone's house today and they had a Kia picanto in the drive. It must have been a good spec one as it had

Id say something newer with good reliability is worth the money and diesel as well, helps avoids as many dead stalls and on empty car parks he can practice clutch control without the accelerator easier. Yes it's possible on a petrol but small engine ones are gutless at the bottom end. Also a diesel will be slower so help make him safer and put him thru pass plus as well and stick some money aside for a skid pan day as any small car will easily slide in the rain on a wet roundabout due to skinny tyres and a young driver Wink

The money will be well spent and bring your son home every night in his car instead of the dreaded phone call Sad ( I mean the one from the police not the one from him saying he is being a dirty stop out Wink ) FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Fiat Panda - superb (Polish) build quality. I've seen several after having involved in crashes = v. tough !

Don't forget the "Pass Plus" scheme - it may make a difference . . ..

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?
