Crank Seals leaking 4.4 V8 - common failure?

Common fault on a 4.4 FF or not?

Had mine leaking and replaced both this week as the labout was so much!

Think i bought a lemon with this one....had to replace the in tank fuel pump last week too....

One of the best driving cars ive had but some much headache in first few weeks of ownership. Not put off yet though

Yes, they do seem to be fairly common. And it's such a labour intensive job, for a £50 part...

We normally advise replacement of the seal while the gearbox is out (for whatever reason)

Curiously though, the diesel models don't seem to suffer from this issue

I have just had this done, gearbox out and repaired. The gasket had perished and the car was losing coolant daily when up to temperature, all fixed now though and sealed up tight !

Luckily my friend is a RR tech otherwise it would have been a very very expensive job as I too had to have the gearbox out to repair it. He did say that if he did again he would probably remove the engine as it was a nightmare getting the gearbox out and back in.

Thumbs Up
