How Do I Get A Spare Key?

Any advice on getting a spare key that works the remote central locking etc? I only got one with the car....... Sad

Is it a case of going to a main dealer and paying a fortune, or is there another way around it?

Main dealer only and you need the V5 for the vehicle and proof of who you are.

My Aunt and Uncle have a family business, Master Locksmiths, been going since 1978. I know they cut blanks for Land Rover, and Porsche, Merc, BMW etc etc. These keys, and the one on my Disco 2, cost us motorists many pounds to sort, which tends to annoy me.

If you sourced a blank key, you could get a decent Locksmith to cut it to code, which would be as new. Many (but not all) blanks off the internet can be made from inferior steel, which causes havoc for the key cutting machines and can cause damage to the cutting tools. For that reason, some companies won't cut a blank unless they know where its come from.

The equipment needed to code the transponders in the key fob, so it actually unlocks the central locking, turns the immobiliser off and starts the car is also very costly, and doesn't cover every car...........

So as many of the dealers tend to get the keys cut elsewhere, and then code to your car, I didn't think it'd be too hard to do the same.

But its pretty hard to get new uncoded fobs from manufacturers, for obvious reasons, and you need proof of identity and ownership etc.........it all becomes a pain in the bum.

For the 4 odd years I had my Discovery 2, I only had one key for it. Our Locksmiths cut me a new blank, so I could open the door etc, but it wouldn't start the car, and the alarm would go off.

The silly amount of money the dealer wanted for a new key was astronomical.

Suppose what I'm saying is if you can get a new blank from somewhere, get it cut to code, and then pair it with your car yourself, you'd save a fortune.

Just not sure how to get hold of a blank key and fob.......... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

the key blank is not a problem,Ebay Thumbs Up the progamming to lock and unlock the doors, no problem,it can be done your self..its on this forum ..now the transponder is the problem..with out going in to what can and cant be done it will be easier to take it into timpsons and ask them to read the chip, they will tell you if it can be copied or not, some can and some can.. start there.try to use a large timpsons as they will have the latest reader.. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

You still need a Faultmate or T4 to "tell" the ECU to accept the new key. The transponder code needs to be linked to the car (hence the main dealer involvement) as well. It is costly to go main dealer but the flip side is that it is apparently quite hard to bypass the security on the Range Rover, making it quite hard (but unfortunately not impossible) to steel them. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

There is one type of chip Timpson’s can do, they write to a T4 chip, i think that’s what it was...you then take it to your car put it in the ignition turn on, wait and then of again, then go back and they write part two of the program, again you return back to your car to finish the process. There is a post on here by a forum member who had it done when I done the flip key conversion, but as I said it’s down to one type of chip... V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.
