Northern Sweden testing grounds ?

We just spent 3 nights (Christmas !) in the North of Sweden, in Kiruna and Jukkasjarvi (we stayed in the famous ICEHOTEL cold room one night). Apparently that part of Sweden is where a lot of the car manufacturers test their cars and I now understand WHY.

On arrival in Kiruna, it was minus 22 at the airport. During our stay in the ICEHOTEL, it was minus 33 outside and minus 5 inside the hotel. It was minus 37 during our two dogsled rides (one during the day and the second at night, Aurora hunting) and it is incredibly cold. Once you feel what it is like to "live" in those temperatures, you start to understand what sort of challenges cars have.

I am hoping to return there one day and do some icedriving (I met someone who has a company organizing business events and they include icedriving courses etc.).

Anyway, I can recommend for you to go there and experience that type of cold (and incredibly beautiful environment). Take some really good gear though because we went well prepared (thanks to our Swedish friends) and even we had some minor issues on the first dog sled ride (they forgot to give us to proper briefing and gear).

I hope to be able to take my FFRR there one day, start in South Africa and drive it all the way to Northern Norway (through Sweden preferably). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

My wife has just read this and has gone oooooohhhh about 5 times. We love Scandinavia but have never done the Ice Hotel, yet! Our latest trip was to Finland in January, Ruka, and the cold is something else. But when you have the right gear on its not a problem. The cars must have a hard time with the cold, but they seem to manage just fine. My wife is always amazed that the locks on the car doors don't freeze solid. Previously..

I can really recommend the Icehotel, it is absolutely worth the money. If we hadn't had the kids, we would have gone for the art suites (really cool art in there) but we had a 4 person room (our daughters are 10 and 2 1/2 and they slept really well as well).

It is amazing the current cars have no freezing locks anymore (but remember most of the work on the remote fobs) and the door rubbers have gotten heaps better (less water between door and rubber and better type rubber I guess).

I can just think of all the mechanical parts that get a beating from the cold especially during starting and warm up.

Sweden is one of our favourite places to go (partly because of our good friends there) as it is very beautiful and incredibly easy to travel through.

Next time we would get even better gear especially boots (have been looking around for it today, minus 100 deg. C rated boots sound perfect to me Laughing ) and gloves as those were the weak points for us (I now have a beautiful furry Icehotel embroided hat that seems to be "the thing" to wear).

I have gained a good appreciation for Volvo, we had a XC90 with studded tires and it was brilliant. It also had a fuel burning heater (which took a while to figure out how to program it as my Swedish is virtually non existing Smile ) It is great to play on full snow hard pack and soft snow and taking turns at a rate that is inconceivable with "normal" tires Smile

I didn't see any FFRR up North but would love to hear/see others doing it, so please do and report on here Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

We took our 110 TD5 double cab to the arctic circle in Norway. That was a great adventure. I would love to take the FFRR up there and I think we probably will in the next few years. Previously..

Its a beautiful place Eugene Smile Reminds me i still need to post that HDD!!

On the otherside you should try getting really drunk when its -10 then sobering up the next morning by running from the lodge to the hot tub 10ms from the house as they tell you 'this is how its done' and realise how quickly EVERYTHING feels the cold!! Sobers you up the quickest i have ever done before thats for sure Smile

My old friends out there worked for SMW and had block heaters for their company cars a few years back but they were about 900km away so still get a fair bit of cold down there Smile

Can't imagine how much fun it would be drifting an FF on studded tyres on a frozen lake Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
