Finally!

Beg: for some time of work to do some repairs on the FFRR
Borrow: 14" Stihl Chainsaw from work
Steal: of the month: 12 x 4ft Oak sleepers £25.

And I have created a flexible ramping solution for the FFRR and the other cars. Even though I can get under the car in off road height, this will make life a lot easier when doing under the car jobs, and assist with jacking. Good news, my 3 tonne axle stands just fit on the sleepers too.

The sleepers:


One Sleeper cut in two, a diagonal cut of 15inches (1ft from one end, 2ft from the other)
Four sleepers cut this way, providing everything needed
Also cut one sleeper into blocks for jacking, support.


Use a short piece, then a longer piece (normally a whole sleeper) then a longer piece on top


This gives a 9" lift




Could go higher to get 13.5" lift, if more height needed.

FFRR just crept up the ramp in high range when only trying one wheel at the front.

Aim to drill some holes and fit dowels to hold the pieces together. And will fit removeable stops at the end of the longer pieces. .

They ain't so good close up, 14" blade on a 15" cut, and with a wibbly wobbly chainsaw, but the big (full) fat tyres soak up the difference.

Was planning to fix wooden battens on the slopes for grip but don't think they are necessary .

I've been using similar piles of wood nailed together for some years, the only thing I would suggest is that the "ramps" need to be wider for stability.
Twice the width at least, if not more.
This can be achieved by using cross pieces of timber as the base layer.
I find them much more stable than the steel versions and feel a lot more comfortable under the car when using them.

Four of those ideal for transmission fluid , keeps it level.

Plastic ones are only £32 on eBay, search "motorhome leveller"
